In accordance with the Trust/Research Academic Staff Agreement , this position offers a comprehensive benefits package found on our Benefits Overview page and an annual salary range of $59,822 to $82,266. This position has an approximate appointment of 1 year plus a day.
Location
This role is in-person and work primarily takes place at North Campus Edmonton .

Working for the Department of Computing Science
Founded in 1964, the Department of Computing Science at the University of Alberta is the oldest and one of the largest computing science departments in Canada. We have an international reputation for contributions in the many fields of computing, both in foundations and applications.
Position Summary
The Research Associate is pivotal in conducting collaborative research at the intersection of computing science and psychiatry, using advanced machine learning techniques to discern patterns in psychiatric disorders. Operating within the academic and research framework guided by Principal Investigators, the associate addresses real-world challenges in mental health, balancing theoretical advancements and practical implementations. Serving as a liaison between academia and industry partners, the associate contributes to effective data integration, administers examinations, represents the organization in conferences, and provides expert consultative services.
Duties
- Designs individual experiments data collection protocols and standards under the supervision of the Principal Investigator.
- Oversees/conducts data collection. Conducts advanced analysis of research data and results.
- Summarizes, analyzes, and organizes data for publication. Participates in the writing of research papers, the preparation of presentations, and/or other publications. May be considered as a coauthor or presenter.
- Assists in the preparation of research grant applications and contract proposals.
- May be responsible for the maintenance and efficient operation of the lab ( e.g., specialized lab equipment maintenance and calibration).
- May guide technical staff, students, and/or post-doctoral fellows in the lab.
- May advise on specialized technical procedures or equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ph.D. in a relevant field such as Computing Science, Psychiatry, Neuroscience, or a closely related discipline is required.
- Knowledge of applying advanced machine learning techniques to analyze and predict psychiatric disorder patterns.
- Experience working in a research environment.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with researchers, graduate students, industry partners, and academics in an interdisciplinary research environment.
- Strong problem-solving abilities to address real-world challenges in mental health research.
