About the Organization The research team, based within the Department of Community Health & Epidemiology at Dalhousie University, focuses on strengthening systems responses to gender-based violence. The team works with community, practice, and policy partners on Tri-council funded studies that use qualitative, quantitative, mixed, and knowledge synthesis methods to understand burdens of violence and evaluate intervention and policy responses. Job Summary Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the Research Associate will take a leadership role in supporting all aspects of the studies, including qualitative and quantitative data collection, data management and analysis, and the preparation of manuscripts, reports, and presentations. The Research Associate will be involved in projects using qualitative, quantitative, mixed, and knowledge synthesis methods.
Key Responsibilities
  • Support and manage research activities, including preparation of research ethics applications, design and piloting of surveys and interview guides, participant recruitment and reimbursement, conduct of surveys and interviews, engagement of community partners, and organizing meetings.
  • Perform qualitative data analysis, including preparing datasets, coding, and contributing to the development of thematic frameworks.
  • Perform quantitative data analysis, including cleaning data, running descriptive statistics, and producing results tables and summaries.
  • Prepare knowledge translation outputs, including writing academic papers and delivering presentations.
  • Support and collaborate with research staff and trainees contributing to the research project.

The successful applicant may work in-person on campus, primarily remotely, or perform a hybrid of the two as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements.
Required Qualifications
  • Graduate degree or professional degree in health, social sciences, or related field with a minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience in an academic research environment with leadership responsibilities.
  • Excellent project management skills and experience managing staff or students, budgets, and other project resources.
  • Experience with both qualitative and quantitative data collection.
  • Experience using qualitative (e.g., NVivo or Dedoose) and quantitative analytic software (e.g., Stata or R).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Proven ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals or other research outputs.
Assets
  • Mixed-methods research skills.
  • Experience with knowledge synthesis (e.g., systematic reviews, meta-analysis, meta-synthesis)
  • Experience with grant writing.
  • Experience conducting community-based research.
  • A demonstrated interest in preventing violence against women, supporting women experiencing violence, or promoting gender and intersectional equity.
