Applications are invited for a Research Associate/Fellow position in the Condensed Matter Theory Group of the School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Nottingham, to be supervised by Kay Brandner and Juan P. Garrahan. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: non-equilibrium dynamics of quantum and/or classical many-body systems; theory of open quantum and/or classical systems; non-Markovian dynamics and memory effects in quantum and/or classical systems out of equilibrium; quantum and stochastic thermodynamics; large-deviation theory; statistical mechanics of machine learning.

The main responsibility of the role is to carry out theoretical and/or computational research in quantum and/or classical condensed matter theory. The appointed candidate will also be expected to communicate the outcomes of their research in the form of publications, seminars and presentations at relevant conferences and workshops. They will further be expected to interact effectively with our local group of researchers, who cover a broad range of theoretical areas including, besides condensed matter theory, statistical physics, computational physics, quantum information theory, and machine learning, on a day-to-day basis.

We seek highly motivated, skilled and independent researchers to complement our team. Candidates should have a doctorate (Ph.D. or equivalent) in physics, or be very close to completion at the time they apply. The successful candidate is generally expected to have completed their Ph.D. by the time they start their role at the University of Nottingham. A strong research record in theoretical condensed matter physics with special emphasis on many-body systems, non-equilibrium statistical mechanics or a closely related area is essential.

The start date is flexible, but the successful candidate is generally expected to be in post by 1st October 2024. The position will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of 24 months. Hours of work are full time (36.25 hours).

Requests for secondment from internal candidates may be considered on the basis that prior agreement has been sought from both your current line manager and the manager of your substantive post, if you are already undertaking a secondment role.

As part of our commitment to improving equality, diversity and inclusion within the school, shortlisted candidates will be given the opportunity to talk to a member of staff representing women, BAME, LGBTQIA+ or disabilities communities. This will be separate to the assessment process and will play no role in the decision to appoint.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Kay Brandner, email [email protected] or Juan P. Garrahan, email [email protected]. Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
