Why This Role Matters:

The SDR Hub , established by the UNSW Faculty of Law and Justice in 2022, aims to connect knowledge and people to make small steps towards big changes. It creates safe spaces for changemakers—from government, business, and wider society—to plan pragmatic action for a sustainable low-carbon future informed by knowledge and insights from across the world. The SDR Hub builds on diverse research, education, and knowledge exchange partnerships aligned with global sustainable development commitments to drive forward the implementation of innovative and transformative workstreams. Currently active in over 20 countries, with a particular focus on Australia and the Pacific, the SDR Hub works closely with decision-makers across government, international institutions, local communities, and the private and non-private sectors to create new approaches to decision-making as well as bold and intelligent reforms.

The SDR Hub Research Associate is a key contributor to the refinement of natural capital accounting as it applies to Oceans, and to our specific pilot projects. We are seeking multi-disciplinary focussed researchers who are working on topics at the intersections of economics, politics, law, environmental management, data science and development. An SDR Hub Research Associate is expected to support the research effort and outputs of the SDR Hub while also developing their research translation expertise.

The position reports to the SDR Hub Director and has no direct reports.

Accountabilities:

Specific accountabilities for this role include:

  • Contribute independently and as a team member in collaborative interdisciplinary research concerning topics: sustainable development of the ocean economy and ocean-based sectors, sustainable development policy and practise partnerships with Pacific Islands countries, design of legislative and policy enabling frameworks for Beyond GDP development, sustainable development of natural capital and ecosystem services.
  • Integrate information from various sources to prepare and draft policy papers, event briefs, collaborator communications and capacity building products.
  • Conduct scientific research and/or enable research teams to create scholarly output that is recognised by peers.
  • Undertake specific project/s and provide a high level of project support, under the guidance of the SDR Hub Directors and leadership team, to contribute to delivery of research activities.
  • Support the dissemination of research outcomes through appropriate channels and outlets by utilising knowledge translation and policy relevant communication styles.
  • Participate in and/or present at conferences and/or workshops relevant to the project as required.

Skills and Experience:

To be considered you will hold Australian Working Rights or Australian Citizenship. Visa sponsorship is not available for this appointment.

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications and related work experience.
  • Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake high quality research and conduct independent research with supervision.
  • Evidence of an ability to translate research into knowledge products for end users or decision-makers.
  • Project management, time management and organisational skills, including a proven ability to interpret circumstances, meet competing deadlines and achieve objectives with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated track record of publications and/or conference presentations relative to opportunity.
