Position Title Research Associate II – Burrowing Owls

Posting Context Statement In coordination with the Idaho Fish and Wildlife Coop Unit Director, this position will oversee and coordinate research on burrowing owls on Lemoore Naval Air Base. Primary duties include:
  • Conducting standardized call-broadcast and walking transect surveys for Burrowing Owls
  • Monitoring active Burrowing Owl nests with regular visits and through the use of trail cameras
  • Trapping and banding adult and nestling Burrowing Owls
  • Reviewing and transcribing camera images from Burrowing Owl nests
  • Resighting banded burrowing owls
  • Data entry (excel, ArcGIS pro, Survey 123, ArcGIS FieldMaps)
  • Supervision of field technician(s) to help with above tasks
  • Write and submit progress reports, annual reports, and manuscripts
  • Position Overview Performs research activities and analysis; implements, evaluates and recommends adjustments to research procedures. Responsible for synthesizing and independently preparing results for publication. Works under general supervision with a significant degree of creativity and latitude. May coordinate research operations and the daily activities of junior research personnel.
    Duties may include:
    • Participating in planning and/or designing of major scientific projects, studies, or applications
    • Planning and conducting research and analysis of scientific data
    • Preparing graphic and narrative reports
    • Interpreting test results and comparing with determined standards and limits
    • Performing site inspections and field oversight if field work is required
    • Planning, designing, developing, monitoring and/or evaluating a distinct portion of a scientific project, study or application
    • Researching, designing, implementing, standardizing, and evaluating new procedures
    • Maintaining detailed records of results and prepares written reports acceptable to the Principal Investigator and funding agencies
    • Other duties as assigned

    Position Qualifications

    Required Experience
    • Two years of research experience beyond receipt of Master’s Degree related to the domain of this position
    Required Education
    • Master’s Degree in wildlife sciences or closely related field
    Required Other
    • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to meet requirements for driving University and USGS vehicles
    • Ability to travel and spend at least 20% of the year at project sight in Lemoore, CA
    • Ability to work non-standard business hours
    Additional Preferred
    • Experience conducting wildlife research and monitoring on a Department of Defense military installation
    • Experience publishing in peer-reviewed journals
    • Experience processing images from motion-activated game cameras
    Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
    • Ability to work indoors and outdoors
    • Ability to work in inclement weather
    • Ability to lift and transport research equipment
    Degree Requirement Listed degree qualification is required at time of hire
