The School of History, Archaeology and Religion is seeking to recruit a new Research Associate in Roman Archaeology to join our dynamic and forward-looking team. Archaeology has been taught and researched at Cardiff for over 100 years and the School continues to lead developments in archaeological science, theory and method.

You will join the research project ‘Feeding the Roman Army in Britain’ (FRAB, PI Dr Richard Madgwick) funded by the Leverhulme Trust. FRAB employs an ambitious multi-isotope programme to examine the logistics of Roman military supply and to address the army’s impact in frontier provinces. Focusing on fauna from forts and rural settlements in three frontier zones the project is addressing reveal animal origins, supply networks and husbandry strategies for resourcing the army.

The role will entail desk-based collation of archaeological datasets and integration with the scientific datasets produced as part of the project, in collaboration with the project team. Contributing to and, in some instances coordinating, the project’s outputs will also form a major part of the role.

You will have expertise in the Roman archaeology, preferably with experience of military archaeology and artefacts in Britain. You should have a PhD in a relevant subject area (or equivalent research experience) and have experience with secondary archaeological data. Applicants should also have excellent communication and IT skills, to include the ability to present complex and specialist professional concepts clearly and confidently to others, using high-level skills and a range of media.

You will join our lively and dynamic School which is internationally recognised for its research and teaching. This is a full-time post, fixed term until 3 January 2025.

Salary: £39,347 – £44,263 per annum (Grade 6)

Job Function
To conduct research within archaeology, focusing on Roman military supply in the frontiers of Britannia and contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University, carrying out research leading to high quality publications. To pursue excellence in research and to inspire others to do the same.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Research

  • To conduct research within archaeology, focusing on Roman military supply in the frontiers of Britannia.
  • To contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University by the production of measurable outputs including publishing in national academic journals and contributing to monographs.
  • To develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research including research funding proposals
  • To attend and or present at conferences/seminars as required
  • To assist with public dissemination activities
  • To contribute to written and oral dissemination of research
  • To undertake administrative tasks associated with the research project, including the planning and organisation of the project and the implementation of procedures required to ensure accurate and timely reporting
  • To prepare research ethics and research governance applications as appropriate
  • To review and synthesise existing research literature within the field
  • To participate in School research activities.
  • To build and create networks both internally and externally to the university, to influence decisions,   explore future research requirements, and share research ideas for the benefit of research projects

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education

  • Postgraduate degree at PhD level (or nearing completion/submission) in Archaeology or a related subject area
  • Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Established expertise and proven portfolio of research within Roman archaeology, preferably with a focus on finds analysis from military sites in Britain
  • Experience working with wide-ranging secondary archaeological data
  • Proven ability to publish high quality research in national/international journals and/or monographs and edited volumes.
  • and understanding of competitive research funding to be able to develop applications to funding bodies
  • Communication and Team Working

  • Proven ability in effective written and oral communication
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and to supervise the work of others
  • Other

  • Proven ability to work without close supervision
  • Desirable Criteria

  • Experience of engagement and outreach work
  • Evidence of ability to participate in and develop both internal and external networks and utilise them to enhance the research activities of the School.
