Research Associate: Mangrove and blue carbon research
 

The Department of Geography at the National University of Singapore invites applications for a position as research assistant/associate in a project on blue carbon. Prior field experience in mangrove or coastal ecosystem is a must. The position is expected to begin in Feb 2024 or soon thereafter. The position will be for a period of 6 months.

THE ROLE
•    You will be part of a research team that studies carbon dynamics in Singapore’s coastal ecosystems 
•    In coordination with the other members of the project team (researchers and students), you will help collecting field data on blue carbon stocks and fluxes, with a particular focus on mangrove and seagrass ecosystems. 
•    Your will spend a large proportion of your time on field work in Pula Ubin and help process field samples in the lab located on NUS campus. 
•    Support project administration, including purchasing of equipment and consumables, requesting Nparks permits, and preparing of SOPs and RAs

 

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT
1.    The appointment will be tenable for a maximum period of 12 months.
2.    The position comes with very competitive remuneration

Qualifications

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
•    A MSc in environmental sciences, ecology, geography, biogeochemistry or similar discipline
•    Extensive experience with field work and associated lab work, preferably in coastal and/or forested ecosystems. 
•    Highly organized and proactive, and with the ability to work independently.
•    Willingness to undertake extensive field work. On a regular basis, field work will require you to stay and work for several-day periods on Pulau Ubin.

 

DESIRABLE SKILLS
•    Prior use of LI-COR instruments or similar to measure photosynthesis and soil respiration/gas flux 
•    Experience with managing and processing data using R, Python or similar.
