Offer Description

The EHESP School of Public Health is a scientific, cultural and professional public institution. EHESP is a member of the network of public service schools (RESP), France Universités and the Conférence des Grandes Ecoles (CGE), and at European and international level, of the European Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPHER) and the French-speaking network of public health schools (REFESP). It is a component of the University of Rennes (experimental public establishment).

A true platform for teaching and research in public health, EHESP is structured around departments (human and social sciences / institute of management / quantitative methods in public health / environmental health sciences) integrated into an interdisciplinary project that includes accredited research centers. EHESP offers executive training courses for the civil service, national master’s degree specializations, specialized master’s degrees, doctoral programs and a wide range of lifelong learning opportunities.

EHESP is home to 1,300 students and 7,000 continuing education trainees from some 50 different countries. It calls on more than 1,000 guest lecturers every year. It employs nearly 430 people, including 90 faculties and lecturers.

1) Job profile

                Job environment

The research chair in global health is part of the Interdisciplinary Center for Global Health, which will be led by EHESP on behalf of the University of Rennes . The Covid 19 pandemic, but also other past, present and future challenges and crises, have illustrated the transnational nature of health issues, which are closely intertwined with all aspects of globalization: circulation of humans, animals and microorganisms, climate change, changes in ecosystems, urbanization, changes in dietary patterns and agricultural production conditions, sedentary lifestyles, growing inequalities, etc. The center aims to approach the issue of environmental and health transitions from a resolutely transdisciplinary and transnational angle, drawing on the specific strengths and assets of the University of Rennes that enable it to strive for excellence, notably :

– IRSET , an environmental health research center (11 teams, 350 researchers & faculties and research support staff), jointly led by Inserm, EHESP and the University of Rennes. It is the headquarters of the “France Exposome” national infrastructure, within the “EIRENE” European infrastructure, coordinated by the University of Masaryk (Czech Republic) – a member of the EDUC European Alliance to which the University of Rennes belongs;

– ARENES , a research center jointly led by the CNRS, University of Rennes, Sciences Po Rennes, EHESP and in partnership with the University of Rennes 2 and Inserm, is distinctive for its resolutely interdisciplinary approach. It brings together 88 researchers and faculties from a wide range of disciplines (epidemiology, economics, political science, history, sociology, medicine, etc.), and two of its research areas (Inequalities, Vulnerabilities, and Health Services and Management) focus primarily on transdisciplinary and transnational health issues.

– Significant achievements in the field of sport and health, notably through collaboration between ENS and University of Rennes 2, both in training (M2 courses) and research (UMR M2S).

– The university hospital complex in Rennes is part of the GCS HUGO, which comprises all the university hospitals in western France. Public health is one of the four axes of its strategic project. Through the GCS Hugo, the Rennes HU site has access to collaborations and tools such as the HUGO data warehouse and a strengthened collaboration with Denmark.

– The EHESP, which provides initial and continuing training for healthcare executives, gives particular relevance and a strong impact to this “public health” signature of the Rennes site. Indeed, at the crossroads between the worlds of higher education and healthcare, EHESP can help ensure that knowledge produced in this field is rapidly available to decision-makers and incorporated into public policy. EHESP can rely on a wide range of professionals, including faculties and expert lecturers, as well as healthcare professionals. EHESP has extensive experience of the research-expertise-action continuum. EHESP has a strong international presence, and works closely with international partners who are major players in global health, such as the Oswaldo Cruz Institute in Brazil, the Gillings School of Global Health – University of North Carolina, Karolinska University in Sweden, and the Institut régional de santé publique in Benin.

In its current phase, the interdisciplinary center for global health can be described as a project incubator, a place where the questions raised by global health challenges and the strengths of the University of Rennes meet, and where responses can be developed for external funding.

This 3-year research chair aims to develop interdisciplinary research and training activities in global health. These activities should be easily integrated or articulated with French and European global health strategies. Areas of particular interest include, but are not limited to: i) one health approach, ii) urbanization and territorial planning, iii) migration, health and globalization, iv) digital health (ethics, law, engineering sciences) or v) organization of health systems, management and leadership. These areas may be developed in collaboration with faculties and researchers from the University of Rennes, spread across a number of joint research centers, in partnership with national research organizations (Inserm, Cnrs, INRIA, INRAE, etc.).

Funding of €32k/year will be allocated to the research chair holder to cover operating expenses.

At the end of the 3-year period, and after evaluation, the research chair may be translated into a permanent faculty position at EHESP.

The chair holder will work in close collaboration with the center management team, the vice deans for research and teaching, the department of international relations, and the teaching coordinators (masters and civil service). He/she will carry out his/her duties within one of EHESP’s four departments, depending on the area of expertise/discipline.

Teaching

The main expected teaching activities are as follows:

  • Implementing a global health skills block in line with its disciplinary field
  • Design and coordinate training programs on global health, in collaboration with faculties and researchers from the University of Rennes and research centers.
  • Teach in the various courses offered by EHESP, in particular the Master of Public Health and the University of Rennes.
  • Supervise and monitor student work.
  • Support students in their training path, for example by guiding them in their orientation, choice of location and subjects for internships, individualization of courses, etc.

The chair holder will be teaching 60 hours per year.

Research

In conjunction with the vice-dean for research and the department chair, the research chair holder will develop a strong research program on global health in his/her field of expertise. Research activities will be conducted in response to national or international funding opportunities, in line with center’s priority areas.

The chair holder will work within one of the two research centers supported by EHESP (IRSET, ARENES).

Extramural service

As EHESP is regularly called upon to carry out extramural service, the chair holder will, within his or her field of expertise and on the basis of his or her knowledge of the professional environment, contribute to extramural service with various structures and agencies in France or within the framework of international cooperation.
