Description of the Assignment: Research Consultant for the Study “Empowering Climate Tech Entrepreneurs in Developing Countries”
Period of assignment/services: approx.18 working days within June-August 2024
Background
Climate change has become a solid threat to both humanity and the planet. With the rise in extreme weather events, increasing food insecurity, and irreversible damage to various ecosystems, coordinated action is necessary to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement.
These technologies are essential not only for mitigating and adapting to the effects of a changing climate but also for their potential to generate new employment opportunities, foster economic growth, and drive broader technological progress. The impact of climate tech startups and scaleups stretches to 9 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals .
Recognizing the potential of entrepreneurship to advance sustainable development, the UNDP’s International Center for Private Sector in Development (ICPSD) and HP Foundation established a partnership. “Entrepreneurial Skills Development Initiative for the SDGs” aims to foster IT and core business skills development and facilitate access to educational resources on entrepreneurship through HP LIFE. Within the framework of this initiative, UNDP ICPSD would like to work with a consultant to conduct a research study on “Empowering Climate Tech Entrepreneurs in Developing Countries”.
Overall objective of the consultancy is to help the UNDP ICPSD in formulating a targeted capacity development guidance document to prepare individuals to climate tech entrepreneurship and to support climate tech start-ups and entrepreneurs. This knowledge product will set the stage for UNDP to strengthen the capacities of support institutions delivering services targeting climate tech entrepreneurs. These include entrepreneurial skills development, mentorship programs, seed funding opportunities, and incubator or accelerator programs that can help transform innovative ideas into viable business ventures
