The Future Ready Food Safety Hub (FRESH) serves as Singapore’s lead scientific platform under the Singapore Food Story R&D Programme, to bring together researchers, regulators and industry to build up Singapore’s food safety science and R&D capabilities to secure Singapore’s food supply and economic value proposition. FRESH will embark on R&D and talent development activities to help enhance Singapore’s local food regulatory capabilities and allow “first-in-market” food products to be safely launched in Singapore, as well as help promote Singapore-developed food standards internationally. FRESH is part of the Singapore Food Story R&D Programme (SFS), with partner organisations being the Singapore Food Agency (SFA), A*STAR and the Nanyang Technological University (NTU).
The Research Engineer I, Regulatory Science, will support FRESH research into food safety regulations and frameworks in Asia. The position is suited to someone looking for a desk-based research activity who is comfortable interpreting regulatory documents based on sound scientific reasoning and who has experience conducting and preparing systematic reviews. The role will be working closely with the FRESH Director to develop guidance documents and sector intelligence to support FRESH partners and stakeholders as well as helping develop FRESH’s food safety regulatory consulting capabilities.
Key Responsibilities:
Undertake systematic literature reviews and intelligence scanning linked to food safety regulations and risk assessment methodologies
Develop written guidance documents and scientific journal reviews on key food safety topics
Aid clients in the sourcing and review of publicly available data for regulatory dossier preparation and ingredient safety reviews
Develop an infrastructure for and help maintain FRESH knowledge base on local and regional food safety regulations & trends
Assist the Director and FRESH staff on the preparation of safety assessments and regulatory reviews
Assist, when necessary, laboratory staff undertaking analysis of food samples and provide input on methods and requirements
Help Director, FRESH in establishing collaborations with international regulatory bodies and platforms and in building a regulatory advisory unit
Provide assistance on FRESH administrative matters and day-to-day activities supporting FRESH staff, when research workload permits.
Job Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in food science or related field
Experience in food legislation, regulatory affairs and food safety/quality assurance and risk assessment preferred.
Direct industry experience in food safety role a plus
Demonstrated knowledge of either food ingredient regulations in Asia and/or food safety and quality management systems required
Strong time management and prioritization skills to meet timelines
Ability to multi-task in a dynamic environment with changing priorities
A high degree of personal motivation
Must be customer service-oriented and work well with different personalities inside and outside of the organization
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to persuade and present to different stakeholders
