Position Summary
Support the faculty investigator by assisting with the development and conducting of equipment design, prototyping and maintenance, experimental design and data acquisition involving use of custom software, data analysis involving use and development of statistical software, and documentation of experimental results. Assists in writing scientific manuscripts, research proposals, and reports. Trains other lab members.
Job Description
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist with the design and prototype of devices and equipment to support research projects that may include use of Makerspaces, machine shops, advanced manufacturing, or supervising instructional design teams; may involve use of Solidworks/Autocad model development or similar.
- Assist with the development of modeling and simulations of experiments that may include use of multiphysics or finite element modeling software, systems biology modeling, machine learning modeling, or electrophysiology modeling. May require programming in a scientific language (e.g., Matlab, Python, C++) and include attendance at new courses to learn new software.
- At the direction of the faculty investigator, conduct experiments and calibrate equipment. Monitor/evaluate experiments. Maintain records/reports. Collect data from experiments.
- Perform data analysis including statistical analyses and original coding if required. Write interpretative reports/summaries. Conduct literature searches.
- Report writing with significant engineering content including formatting of equations—use of scientific word processing software such as LaTeX.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
- M.S. or equivalent in related field.
- Familiarity with basic rules of computer coding and/or 3D printing.
- Ability to learn new software independently.
- Familiarity with concepts in physics and engineering.
- Ability to communicate orally and in written form with others outside their discipline.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline or physics or 4 years of equivalent education/experience in an engineering or sciences laboratory or research setting.

Salary Range
$16.76 – $28.51 / Hourly
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one’s qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
