Summary

Save the Children’s Research, Evidence and Learning (REL) team in the Department of Education and Child Protection (DECP) under the International Programs Division is a team of applied researchers and knowledge professionals that collaboratively generate and disseminate research in education and child protection that bridges the humanitarian and development nexus. We support program colleagues with evidence to inform high-quality programs. The evidence we generate and share drives thought leadership and advocacy in the education and child protection sectors.

Our team has been instrumental in designing and testing a new Remote Assessment of Learning (ReAL) to complement existing learning assessments that are designed for face-to-face administration. The ReAL toolkit assesses literacy, numeracy, and social and emotional learning skills of children ages 5–14. It is for remote use where enumerators cannot assess children’s learning in person. It can be administered by a smart or regular mobile phone. To date, the ReAL project has run validation studies in seven countries (Cambodia, El Salvador, Mozambique, Niger, Philippines, Sudan, West Bank and Gaza). We have partnered with the Yale Child Study Center and affiliates from the Free University of Berlin as well as local academic partners in each country to support the validation process. We will generate publications of the findings throughout 2024 with a planned launch of the validated toolkit in September 2024.

Implementation toolkits: We are seeking an intern to support the REL team to review and revise learning evaluation toolkits that measure a variety of programs, projects, and special initiatives. Specifically, the intern will review Microsoft PowerPoint files and Word documents for the International Social and Emotional Learning Assessment (ISELA), the Holistic Assessment for Learning (HAL), and the Holistic Assessment of Learning and Development Outcomes (HALDO), identifying gaps and opportunities to strengthen the training and contextualization guidance and toolkits. The intern will also work with colleagues across the organization to validate each revised toolkit and incorporate final feedback into updated materials.

What You’ll be Doing (Essential Duties & Responsibilities)

ReAL

  • Attend ReAL data analysis workshops with members of the global research team (Save the Children, Yale, Free University of Berlin) and co-investigators in pilot countries (Save the Children country office colleagues, local university partner colleagues).
  • Attend global ReAL research meetings to coordinate analysis and manuscript writing activities.
  • Conduct and write literature reviews for planned publications.
  • Serve as an active member of a planning committee for the global launch of the ReAL toolkit.

Implementation tool review and revision

  • Review existing training materials of the ISELA, HAL, and HALDO to adapt previous training content to current needs.
  • Solicit and consolidate feedback on toolkits from key staff, validating toolkits with relevant Country Office research and evaluation leads.
  • Support document drafting and preparation

IDELA

  • Support data processing of selected databases for the IDELA Data Explorer.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be an actively enrolled in an Associate, Bachelor, Master or other post high school education program, or have graduated within 6 months of intern program start date.
  • Possess strong written skills, solid interpersonal skills and ability to work within a team.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Currently eligible to work in the U.S.

Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience with and/or training in quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods research methods.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting and writing literature reviews
  • Experience working in and/or conducting research in low- and middle-income countries.
  • Knowledge of or training in psychometric analytical methods and/or measure validation processes.
