Applications are invited for a Research Fellow position within the School of Ocean and Earth Science at the University of Southampton. The work will involve the development of an “Organ on Chip” platform for sensing toxins in the aquatic environment. The project is part of a three-year European project, AquaBioSens (https://www.aquabiosens.eu/ ) and you will have the opportunity to collaborate closely with microfluidic engineers at the University of Southampton and the other EU consortium members developing novel biosensors.
The project at Southampton is a collaboration between Prof Hywel Morgan in School of Electronics and Computer Science and Dr Nic Bury in the School of Ocean and Earth Science. There are two Research Fellows associated with the project, one with Prof Hywel focusing on the engineering aspect of developing a microphysiological platform and the other with Dr Bury focusing on the biological aspect of the project, and you will work closely with the other fellow to develop the “Organ on Chip” platform. The biological Research Fellow will develop a marine fish gill cell culture system to detect pollutant in the marine environment using fluorophores and gene expression and will involve both lab-based cell culture work as well as environmental field monitoring.
The successful candidate will have a PhD or equivalent professional qualification and experience in a relevant biological/environmental/cell biological science. Applications from candidates who are working towards a PhD will be considered. The candidates must possess detailed knowledge and experience in cell biology with an interest in applying this knowledge to environmental and toxicological issues.
We are looking for a self-motivated person, able to organise their own research activities effectively, and collaborate successfully across disciplines. The successful candidate will be a good communicator and will be expected to take the lead in preparing reports, presenting results to the consortium and writing research papers. You must also be able to work effectively in a team and organize time, tasks and responsibilities with other team members.
