Offer Description

Host Institution: i3S – Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde, Porto, Portugal.
Scientific Area: Oncology.
Project Title: “The role of the heme-exporter FLVCR1 in hepatocellular carcinoma”.
Workplans:
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common type of primary liver cancer and the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. There is an unmet need to discover new biological mechanisms in HCC and develop new therapies. The FLVCR1 protein is the only known exporter of heme, a precursor to haemoglobin and other crucial hemoproteins that is biosynthesized in the bone marrow and liver. It was recently reported that FLVCR1 expression is increased in HCC, positively correlated with vascular invasion and associated with worse survival. However, the role of FLVCR1 in HCC remains unexplored. We hypothesize that FLVCR1 has a pro-tumorigenic role in HCC. In the current project we propose to comprehensively dissect the role of FLVCR1 in HCC using patient samples, human HCC cell lines and well-established mouse models of HCC. This research has potential translational implications for biomarker discovery and drug development in liver cancer.
