Research/Lab Aide
Job Description
The School of Applied Sciences and Arts within the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts at ASU’s Polytechnic campus is seeking a two-year Research/Lab Aide with background in biology, ecology, or related field to assist with sponsored project research. The start date for this position will be Sunday, May 5, 2024.
The position will relate herpetofauna (reptiles and amphibians) community to environmental and riparian habitat along the lower San Pedro and Gila rivers, following biocontrol treatment (of saltcedar). The researcher will lead field crew to conduct surveys via live trapping methods and perform habitat measurements May-Sept, 2024 and 2025. The researcher will analyze mark-recapture data to be used in ecological models related to environmental conditions. The researcher will conduct field work, analyze data, present results, and produce written progress and final report to the sponsor.

Essential Duties
- Perform scientific data collections and analyses.
- Use field mark-recapture techniques to relate reptile and amphibian abundance and diversity to riparian habitat and management.
- Conduct library searches to find research information on related procedures and topics pertinent to the study system.
- Train students and volunteers in the performance of technical procedures.
- Analyze data and write research progress reports including summarizing test results of participating investigators and assists in the preparation and writing of papers for publication.
- Perform administrative functions such as assisting in budgets and procuring supplies and equipment.
- Assist in the design and implementation of statistical techniques and computer data systems including GIS and archiving data for future scientific research data collection.
- Maintain meticulous records of data, analyses, and field notes.
- Generate computerized statistical data for analytical purposes using a R software packages; visualize and interprets data for research or ecological projects.
- Assist in the development of written operating procedures and performs quality control checks to ensure procedures are followed.
- Complete all ASU trainings.
Minimum Qualifications
One year of laboratory/research, field research, technical maintenance or archaeological experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
Desired Qualifications
- Evidence of a Bachelor of Science degree in Ecology, Biology, Natural Resources, or similar field.
- Experience conducting research (design, data collection, analysis, presentation).
- Experience working in remote field conditions.
- Animal handling experience including reptiles and/or amphibians.
- Experience measuring vegetation and environmental variables in the field.
- Evidence of effective communication skills.
- Demonstrated knowledge of research methods and experience in data collection.
- Demonstrated knowledge of GIS or spatial modeling or ecological modeling.
- Demonstrated knowledge of R software.
- Experience in data processing and analyses.
- Interest in mentoring students from underrepresented groups in STEM.
Working Environment
- The majority of the work will be performed in lab/office.
- There will be field work performed in the outdoors and in remote areas.
- Data analyses and report will be in office.
- Position requires the person to wear a respirator for their job
- Position works with animals or animal tissues
