IGH aims to support the development of robust solutions to aspects of the world’s major global health challenges through scholarly outputs, education, public engagement, translational research, and ultimately by influencing public policy and professional practice.The Centre for Clinical Research in Infection and Sexual Health has a research programme covering a wide range of studies from observational cohort studies, qualitative and mixed methods studies to intervention trials. Historically most of the work has focussed on HIV and other sexually transmitted infections including viral hepatitis. Recently we have expanded our portfolio of infectious diseases research particularly to support studies in TB and COVID-19, and most recently Mpox infection. The centre collaborates with other centres in IGH to provide the support needed to conduct clinical research. We work closely with the Centre for Population Research in Sexual Health and HIV on research concerning digital health and pathways for care in sexual health.We have an exciting opportunity for a Research Nurse to join our team. The post offers a unique opportunity for the successful candidate to contribute to the development of cutting-edge research into digital sexual health within the SEQUENCE Digital research programme led by Prof Claudia Estcourt (PI). The programme focuses on the delivery of online clinical care for people diagnosed with chlamydia and their sex partners.About the roleThe postholder will be part of a team, currently comprising ten research nurses, and work closely with clinicians, non-clinical research associates and other members of the clinical research team. While the research nurses in the team may be allocated to any of the portfolios of 15-20 current studies, the particular focus for this post will be on digital sexual health (eSexual Health).The main purpose of the role is to work with the trial team to deliver a pilot study and the follow-on pragmatic cluster-randomised controlled trial. Specifically, the post holder will work within a clinical trials team and the specific study team. The post holder will:

  • develop standard operating procedures and contribute to site set-up
  • set -up and operationalise a clinical helpline for the eSHC.
  • carry out telephone-based clinical assessments.
  • support patients to navigate the eSHC.
  • validate prescription recommendations generated by the eSHC.
  • conduct trial follow-up calls with index patients and sex partners to collect outcome data and ask additional routine clinical follow-up questions

The post holder will also be expected to:

  • Assist the principal investigator with pre-study preparation and study initiation:
  • Provide training for other research and clinic staff on studies:
  • Identify and recruit participants
  • Comply with the study procedures and data collection regulations
  • Assist with other research projects undertaken by the clinical research team
  • Provide patient care within the expanded role of nurses, including as an Independent Nurse Prescriber (for those with an appropriate qualification), to support the treatment and care of patients relevant to the study population, under the supervision of the designated clinician.

A non-medical prescribing qualification would be desirable.The ideal candidates will be organised, with meticulous attention to detail and record keeping, excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a range of individuals and groups. They will understand data protection and confidentiality issues with the ability to maintain accurate clinical, research and other records using the organisation’s documentation, clinical trial site files and other data collection methods.The postholder is expected to make best practice an absolute priority.
