The opportunity:

Join our dynamic Health Informatics Team as a skilled Research Officer! The Health Informatics Group is at the forefront of statewide vaccine safety surveillance, together with SAEFVIC (Surveillance of Adverse Events Following Vaccination In the Community). As a vital part of the epidemiology and informatics teams, we report to the Department of Health, Victoria, and nationally on AEFI trends and potential signal detections.

The Research Officer (Machine Learning) will play a key part in contributing to the areas of vaccine safety and child health informatics. Your responsibilities will involve health informatics research facilitation with internal and external researchers and include supervision of students where relevant. The role will also be actively engaged in relevant grant funding applications which is integral to the success of our research. You will also work closely with the Informatics Lead to deliver research outcomes under the guidance and towards the overarching vision of Group Leader Prof Jim Buttery.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Providing machine learning expertise and supervision, especially in the area of social media;
  • Joining forces with the Group Leader and Informatics Lead to conduct and support research into public health and child health informatics;
  • Contributing to design, implementation and use of database / cloud storage platforms and visualisation tools for patient data, statistics and other information for reporting, trending and troubleshooting;
  • Supporting and progressing transformation of the teams research projects using data and business intelligence;
  • Strengthening our high caliber, competitive research.

About you:

  • Post-graduate qualification in machine learning or similar
  • Strong programming skills and experience in Natural Language Processing and Machine learning methodologies
  • Confidence in using statistical tools to interpret data sets
  • Experience working on a cloud-based data platform such as Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure.
  • Knowledge of SQL query and DAX
  • You will have a proven track record creating documents, dashboards and visual reports to identify trends and patterns that are valuable for diagnostic and predictive analytics efforts.
  • Combined with a background in statistical and data mining methods, and a demonstrated ability to use them to answer research questions and drive outcomes.
  • Ability to work with loosely defined problems, handle ambiguity well, with a practical and output orientated mindset.
