Job Summary The Department of Surgery Division of Research seeks an Investigator Initiated Research Specialist to provide high-quality program administration for clinical research projects undertaken by investigators across the department’s divisions. This position will be responsible for providing support for Department of Surgery faculty in their investigator-initiated clinical research studies. Key responsibilities will include research project management with attention to timelines and deliverables; development, submission, and management of IRB protocols; clinical data collection, management, and presentation; and assistance with generation of research proposals and manuscripts. The position will collaborate with principal investigators, residents, fellows, and students to facilitate project goals and coordinate all phases of the research process.
The successful candidate will have a background in clinical or biomedical science and familiarity with medical topics, experience performing retrospective clinical research, and experience submitting and working with the IRB. Prior experience with manuscript and grant writing is preferred. Clinical knowledge relevant to surgical fields is preferred but not essential.
Skills / Knowledge / Abilities
  • 1 year working on investigator-initiated studies, including, but not limited to coordinating development of protocols and managing timelines for various submissions.
  • Understanding of clinical research methods and operations, the Institutional Review Board, NIH submission process, and other research review committees and regulatory bodies.
  • Thorough knowledge and ability to apply all relevant Federal, state, and university regulations, policies, and federal guidance documents.
  • Thorough knowledge and experience with quantitative and qualitative research design; scientific research concepts and terminology.
  • Proficiency using computers in a Windows environment, including advanced skills in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Demonstrated self-discipline and sound, independent judgment.
Does this position have supervisory responsibilities? No
Preferred Education/Experience
  • 3+ years of relevant experience and/or equivalent education and experience in clinical research
  • 2 years of experience preparing submissions for the Institutional Review Board, the FDA, other regulatory organizations and/or scientific review committees.
