The Wythe Lab at the University of Virginia School of Medicine is looking to hire a full-time scientist with experience in creating experimental models of human disease, with a focus on zebrafish, mouse, and stem cells, to contribute to multiple projects focused on vascular and lymphatic endothelial developmental defects and adult pathologies, particularly vascular malformations. We are seeking a scientist with a PhD that has extensive experience using either mice or zebrafish animal models (preferably both), as well as experience with cell culture (HUVEC, HMVEC, HCMEC, stem cells, etc.). Experience in confocal imaging and lightsheet imaging and post-acquisition image analysis (IMARIS, AMIRA, Arivis, ImageJ/Fiji, Neurolucida, etc.) would be beneficial, as would experience with cryosectioning or paraffin sectioning and conventional histology and immunostaining.
In this position, the scientist is expected to mentor junior graduate students within the laboratory, as well as technicians and post-baccalaureate students, to use cutting edge technologies and bring in new methods (e.g. scRNA-seq, BioID, etc.). The candidate will present their findings locally (lab meeting, departmental seminar, Center for Developmental Genomics, Cancer Center, Brain Immunology and Glia Center, CVRC, etc.) and nationally at scientific meetings (NAVBO, Weinstein, etc.). The candidate is also expected to publish their results in reputable peer reviewed journals, preparing figures in adobe illustrator and composing initial drafts which will be edited by the PI. A background in neuroscience, immunology, or vascular biology is attractive, as well as developmental biology.
Minimum Requirements
Education: Requires a doctoral degree or master’s degree with significant experience.
Expected salary: $65,000-$80,000 depending on experience. Includes benefits.
Physical Demands
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
