Job Summary:

MAPMG is seeking a Research Scientist II to join the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group’s (MAPMG) research unit, the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Research Institute (MAPRI). MAPRI Research Scientists design and implement major health services and epidemiology related research projects in their respective areas of health care research. For this Research Scientist II position, interests and expertise in cancer epidemiology and/or health service research are preferred.

A main objective for the Research Scientist II is to build a defined, innovative, and independent research portfolio, to attain a high level of external funding (federal grants, foundations, industry), and to disseminate results through peer reviewed journal publications and conference presentations/abstracts.  In addition to externally funded research, the Research Scientist II may be assigned to intramural research projects relevant to MAPRI and MAPMG, commensurate with their expertise, serving as researcher and consultant on projects and programs for MAPRI and MAPMG.  The scientist will also serve as a liaison and consultant to MAPMG physicians and leadership for research questions that will utilize MAPRI resources.  Successful candidates will have an established bibliography of peer-reviewed literature and track record of extramural grant funding. 

This position offers a hybrid work arrangement with the ability to go into the office at least once per week. This position will be based in Rockville, Maryland. Candidates must be willing to relocate to the Washington D.C., Maryland, or Virginia area.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepares grant proposals, internal reports and peer-reviewed publications independently and collaboratively
  • Provides consultation on study design, analysis plans and interpretation of study results to MAPMG physicians and leaders, Kaiser Permanente Mid-Atlantic States (KPMAS) managers, clinicians, clinical staffs, and committees
  • Initiates collaboration with external partners including local, state, and federal agencies, other Kaiser Permanente regions, research networks (such as the Health Care Systems Research Network) and other academic partners
  • Publishes 1-2 papers per year as a 1st author, and 1-2 papers per year as a collaborating author
  • Submits ≥ 1 grant application for extramurally-funded research projects as Principal Investigator (PI), and ≥ 1 study as co-PI or site-PI per year. Achieves funding for 75-80% of annual effort within 5 years of employment
  • Presents abstracts at national scientific meetings; teaches and/or reviews papers for national journals. Presents (poster or oral) at greater than or equal to 1 national scientific meetings as 1st author
  • Provides service to the scientific community through peer review for journals, and may serve on expert or grant review panels
  • Seeks consultation from senior scientists for specific scientific and administrative issues
  • Works collaboratively with the MAPRI team to develop the scientific program that helps achieve the goals of MAPMG and Kaiser Permanente, generally 
  • Provides and receives consultation from MAPMG and KPMAS staff as required for research development
  • Mentors staff internal to MAPMG and KPMAS (including clinician researchers) or research interns to support their research activities
  • Partners with research teams (data analysts and project managers) to ensure projects are successfully completed within prescribed timelines and objectives
  • Abides by regulatory compliance guidelines and the Principles of Responsibility (Kaiser Permanente’s code of conduct) by maintaining confidentiality, protecting the assets of the organization, acting with ethics and integrity, reporting non-compliance, adhering to applicable Federal/State laws and regulations, maintaining accreditation and licensure requirements, and performing job functions within KP policies and procedures
  • Consistently demonstrates service behaviors and principles defined by the Kaiser Permanente Service Quality Credo, the Kaiser Permanente Mission as well as specific departmental and organizational initiatives

Qualifications:

  • PhD in a relevant research discipline (e.g., epidemiology, nursing, health services research) or MD/DO with an advanced degree (e.g., MPH, MAS, MS, PhD, etc.) 
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of post-doctoral research (or equivalent) in epidemiology, health services or related field
  • Minimum of three (3) years experience in a health system research setting preferred
  • Career publication list of more than thirty (30) peer reviewed manuscripts, including at least 6 as first author
  • Interest and expertise in epidemiology or health services research, with a particular clinical area of expertise and pursuit (cancer epidemiology preferred)
  • Demonstrated ability to design and lead simultaneous original research studies, and publish results
  • Experience developing successful federal grant applications
  • Expertise in the statistical techniques, study designs and research methods used in epidemiological and health services research
  • Experience working with and/or leading multidisciplinary teams
