Job description:
DESY
The Advanced Multilayer X-ray Optics group (FS-ML) is an international team of scientists, students and engineers. We are developing novel X-ray optics and imaging modalities for experiments with intense, coherent X-ray sources such as synchrotrons and X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs). These sources have opened up new opportunities for breaking barriers in focusing, dispersing, and otherwise controlling X-ray pulses in space and time. Our multilayer-based optics are prepared with magnetron sputtering systems, which require sophisticated software control that ensures very high accuracy in their deposition. We are looking for a new member to join our group as a Research software engineer for controls to work on the development, implementation and testing software control programs to control such systems and other instrumentation used in our experiments.
About your role:
- The software development, testing and implementation to control various hardware components (motors, DAQ, PLC) including advanced programmable sputtering machines in the laboratory and X-ray microscopy setups needed to perform experiments at synchrotrons and XFELs in coordination with the scientists
- Participation in experiments at synchrotrons and XFELs
- Systematic further development of the above advanced control systems
- Documentation of software and testing
About you:
- University degree in computer science or physics or comparable subject or equivalent skills and experience
- Profound experience in the control of various hardware components (motors, DAQ, PLC)
- Very good technical knowledge of various programming languages such as Python, C, C++
- Good knowledge of the various APIs (application programming interfaces)
- Knowledge of real-time processing, Linux system administration and machine learning
- Enthusiasm for good software engineering methods (such as version control, testing)
- Willingness to work across disciplines and acquire new skills
- Experience in dealing with large data sets
- Communication skills and ability to work in a team
- Good written and spoken English skills
Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. Respectful cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees are particularly important to us. Gender equality is an important aspect for us. To support work life balance we offer flexible working hours, variable part-time, job-sharing models and participation in mobile work (up to 50%). You will benefit from our family-friendly and collegial atmosphere, our established health management and occupational pension provision. As a public funded employer, we offer you a secure workplace and facilitate your individual career with our comprehensive training and development opportunities. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV-AVH. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a German job ticket at both locations.
