Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve Virginia (CBNERR-VA) is one of 30 sites in the National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) system, and has a mandate to conduct research, stewardship, education, and coastal training. CBNERRVA operates from VIMS, and is the steward of 4 unique reserves along the York River that protect a variety of estuarine habitats.

The Research Specialist I will support reserve staff focused on habitat-based projects and planning and implementing coastal ecosystem monitoring programs, specifically supporting field and laboratory operations for seagrass, marsh and natural resource monitoring and projects. This position is a temporary (hourly) position not to exceed 6 months.

Reporting to the Program Leads in the Coastal Habitat Team, the responsibilities will include (but not be limited to) the following:

  • Support field and laboratory operations for seagrass, marsh and natural resource monitoring and projects.
  • Collect multi-media (geospatial, water, soil, biological) samples and related processing.
  • Data entry, analysis, and reporting.

Required Qualifications:

EDUCATION:

  • Associate degree in scientific discipline; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid Driver’s License

COMPETENCIES / EXPERIENCE:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory and field safety.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of field research and lab testing procedures and techniques.
  • Ability to prepare samples and perform standard or routine lab testing.
  • Demonstrated skills/ability to carry, operate, and maintain tools and equipment in outdoor environments.
  • Ability to follow defined procedures and guidelines or under minimal supervision.
  • Attention to detail in collection and entry of data.
  • Ability to maintain records and record test results to a high degree of accuracy.
  • Proficiency in a variety of software applications to include MS office with the ability to record data.
  • Ability to successfully complete tasks in outdoor environment, including underwater and wetland habitats at all times of the year.

Preferred Qualifications:

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Environmental Science, GIS or related field.

COMPETENCIES / EXPERIENCE:

  • Basic knowledge of qualitative and/or quantitative research methods
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct a variety of research techniques and procedures, operate laboratory equipment GPS/survey equipment, and collect and report basic findings
  • Ability to independently carry out structured research projects and provide assistance in developing research procedures
  • Ability to independently carry out defined procedures and guidelines
  • Ability to communicate data and research findings
  • Demonstrated comfort using snorkeling equipment.
  • Working knowledge of small vessels / boats, or ability to obtain small vessel certification.
