Research Support Assistant
Required Qualifications: (as evidenced by an attached resume)
Associate degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Biology, Chemistry, or a related field completed before employment. Hands-on experience in a biomedical research laboratory.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Biology, Chemistry, or a related field. One [1], or more, years of research experience. Experience with molecular biology techniques such as plasmid purification, PCR, gel electrophoresis, and bacterial culture.
Brief Description of Duties:
The Gunn Lab at Stony Brook University is seeking a Research Support Assistant to perform research related to pancreatic lipase. The Gunn Lab studies the structure of metabolic enzymes from the pancreas using techniques from biochemistry, biophysics, and cell biology. The Research Support Assistant will conduct research under the direction of the PI, which will include tissue culture, protein purification, electron microscopy, and activity assays. The Research Support Assistant will also help set up and maintain the lab supplies and organization. Please see www.thegunnlab.com for more information about the lab’s research and environment.
The successful incumbent:
- Must have a working knowledge of Microsoft 360.
- Must be driven, organized, and excited to learn new skills.
- Must be able to work independently.
- Must be able to lift and carry supplies up to 10 lbs.
Duties:
- Engage in research under the direction of the PI investigating pancreatic lipase.
- Maintain lab organization and shared stocks. Assist in complying with all Environmental Health and Safety regulations.
- Keep electronic lab records, analyze data, and generate written and oral reports of research performed. Participate in group meetings.
- Train new Graduate and Undergraduate students in lab techniques.
- Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
In addition to the employee’s base salary, this position is eligible for $3,087 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
