The School of Applied & Engineering Physics (AEP), is a School in Cornell University’s College of Engineering. The mission of the School of Applied and Engineering Physics is to create and disseminate knowledge in intellectual areas at the interface between physics and traditional engineering or scientific disciplines, using the techniques, skills and principles commonly associated with physics.

What You Will Do

This is a one year term position with the possibility of renewal based on available funding and performance.

Applied & Engineering Physics is seeking a Research Support Specialist to support the emerging measurement facility as part of Cornell’s Quantum Initiative. This is a hands-on equipment, user, and research support position.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Provide complete maintenance, supervision, training documentation, scheduling, and user processing instruction and support on assigned equipment, which includes maintaining quality and safety of the equipment and space.
  • Maintain professional relationships with users, faculty, and vendors to maximize efficiency of usage of the facility and uptime of tools.
  • Additionally, there is expectation of an expanding role in the Cornell Quantum Ecosystem as additional equipment is procured to be part of the facility.

What We Need

The successful candidate should have experience and familiarity with basic troubleshooting of complex tools, particularly with cryogenic systems, familiarity with gas handling, vacuum systems, and related components. The successful candidate should also have knowledge of basic electronic and component/module troubleshooting skills. Experience working in a multi-user fabrication facility with experience interacting with users and trainees at a broad range of levels is a plus. Additionally, the candidate would need:

  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Masters degree in a Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field with 3-5 years of experience. Any equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered, so those with less or more education and experience are encouraged to apply.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

What We Prefer

  • Experience with DC and/or RF measurements in a dilution refrigerator.
  • Experience maintaining a dilution refrigerator.
  • Research experience in quantum sciences.
