Job Description Summary:
Develop and implement training of Animal Care and Use Program to achieve results by providing training, direction, facilitation and control of resources. Maintains and cultivates relationships among researchers, IACUC, Occupational Health, EHS, Facilities-Maintenance and LAR staff. Demonstrates animal handling techniques and biomedical procedures. Performs related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree. A equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience may substitute for degree on a year for year basis.

Work Experience: Three (3) years work experience in laboratory animal research facility.

Preferred Qualifications

Certification: ALAT Certification

Work Experience:

  • Computer experience with Microsoft Office Suite, specifically in Microsoft Office.

  • Experience with biomedical research terminology.

  • Previous experience working with confidential information.

  • Work experience coordinating the execution of multiple projects with varying degrees of difficulty and frequently shifting priorities

  • Experience training individuals and groups

Skills

  • Proficient in understanding and adherence to compliance of laboratory animal regulations.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, project-reporting skills, and adherence to timelines and milestones.

  • Ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.

Job Duties

  • Develop, revise and implement training materials including presentations, handouts, case analysis, updates on LAR website, topics for staff meeting and other resource materials.

  • Assist with multiple training programs (training for animal users/researchers, non-animal users/service providers, and LAR staff/animal workers).

  • Develop and assist with training and orientation schedules for new employees.

  • Coordinate training activities with appropriate parties until all the training requirements are complete and training records are filed. This includes working with Veterinary Techs as necessary for specialized clinical trainings and demonstrations related to such functions and performing blood draws, clipping nails, etc…

  • Instruct/teach/facilitate training programs.May serve as a subject matter expert for LAR staff training and as biomedical/technical service provider for researchers.

  • Identifies, develops and arranges the use of subject matter experts (internal researchers, vendors, professional organizations, regulatory agencies and external consultants) for training of LAR and animal research community at KUMC.

  • Assists with preparing AALAS classes, Hot Topics and general CE training opportunities.

  • Assists with updating training information on LAR websites and in learning management system.

  • Development of instructor-level training and training program masters to ensure standardization of instructional materials, handouts, tests, lesson plans and delivery.

  • Assists the LAR Training and Quality Assurance Manager in the production and distribution of various publications (signs, instructional guides, schedules, etc.).

  • Remains current in job specific procedures (animal care and biomedical procedures) in order to apply the most appropriate methodologies by attending conferences, educational programs and webinars, reading professional publications, using the internet and participating in professional organizations.

  • Designs and applies evaluation techniques and proficiency testing methods to measure the effectiveness of training.

  • Directs the review and selection of training materials.

  • Assists in maintaining training records of facilities/non-animal users, researchers/animal users and animal workers. Maintains individual training records (hard copy and electronic).

  • Assists with husbandry animal facility management by entering into animal rooms to ascertain training effectiveness.

  • Assists the LAR Training and Quality Assurance Manager with LAR Newsletter preparation. Periodically updates animal user e-mail distribution list.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Promote a positive work environment that is maintained through open and effective communication, and establish and foster strong relationships and efficient interactions with internal investigators, other KUMC departments and stakeholders.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
