The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a premier research-to-policy institution, generating evidence, strengthening research and related capacity in the African research and development ecosystem, and engaging policy to inform action on health and development. APHRC seeks to drive change by developing strong African research leadership and promoting evidence-informed decision-making (EIDM) across sub-Saharan Africa.
APHRC seeks to recruit a Researcher to work in the Aging and Development (AAD) unit within the Population Dynamics and Urbanization thematic area.
Responsibilities (dependent on level appointed):
- Conceptualize and develop research program of work on aging in Africa, contribute to project management and coordination of research activities;
- Lead and contribute to financial sustainability of the unit through fundraising efforts and cultivating relations with key institutional donors;
- Lead and contribute to scientific paper writing and other publications including policy/research briefs, fact sheets and blogs;
- Participate in periodic reporting and strategic planning for the unit and theme;
- Lead policy engagement, knowledge translation and communication to appropriate audiences;
- Represent the Center at local, national, regional and international forums, including relevant technical working groups and expert committees;
- Supervise, mentor and train junior researchers in the unit and the Center at large.
Qualifications and Experience:
- PhD in Gerontology, Social Work, Demography, Population Studies, Sociology, Public Health or any other aging-related discipline;
- Strong writing skills and a good publications record, experience in developing proposals. Evidence of previous successful grants will be an advantage;
- Strong quantitative or qualitative skills and experience with mixed methods will be an added advantage provided one is solid in either quantitative or qualitative methods;
- Proven experience and excellence in conducting desk and literature reviews; managing, analyzing and interpreting complex data and familiarity with analytical software;
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and ability to work in a culturally diverse team.;
How to apply
Successful candidates may be appointed at Associate Research Scientist (3-5 years after PhD), Research Scientist (6-11 years after PhD) or Senior Research Scientist (12+ years after PhD) levels depending on experience and track record. The position comes with an attractive, internationally competitive remuneration package including medical, travel and life insurance cover.
