Position description
Global Energy Monitor is seeking an experienced Researcher with fluency in English and Arabic, who will work as part of the Oil and Gas Program, working on specific trackers for English and Arabic research within the Oil and Gas Program. The researcher will also provide Arabic language research for other trackers within Heavy Industry and Renewables and Other Power as needed.
The Oil & Gas team’s research program focuses on producing global datasets that reflect current and future oil and gas-fired power plants, oil and gas extraction sites and their development, crude oil and natural gas liquids (NGL) transmission pipeline projects and their development, liquified natural gas import and export terminals and their development, and natural gas transmission pipeline projects and their development. The Oil & Gas program currently includes the following trackers: Global Oil and Gas Extraction Tracker, Global Oil Infrastructure Tracker, Global Oil and Gas Plant Tracker and the Global Gas Infrastructure Tracker.
The Challenge
According to the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC), we have less than a decade to make massive and unprecedented changes in the global economy to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. To meet that challenge, Global Energy Monitor is creating trackers and other tools to provide detailed information on energy facilities, sponsors, and financing.

Global Energy Monitor (GEM) is a network of researchers developing information for the worldwide climate and clean energy movement. Since the organization’s founding in 2007, GEM’s research has become an essential tool for activists, journalists, policymakers, and scientists. GEM’s data and reports are used and cited by organizations ranging from Greenpeace to The Wall Street Journal. GEM’s information is used by Bloomberg Terminals, the International Energy Agency, the IPCC, Climate Analytics, Carbon Tracker Initiative, and hundreds of others.
Location
GEM does not have a central office; instead, GEM works with employees to create suitable home offices catered to the needs of their role. Remote staff do not have to be based in the United States; however, preference will be given to those living in the United States. GEM can hire employees worldwide in countries where our PEO (Deel) operates, except in countries classified as Level 3 or 4 on the U.S. Department of State’s website.
Position Summary and Duties
- Using various global data sources to collect, gather, and vet information to ensure that GEM’s trackers will provide the most accurate and timely information on global (Sources include government data, company reports, news articles, as well as information from partner organizations, etc.)
- Creating, formatting, and updating wiki pages for projects on the GEM.wiki platform.
- Supporting report development and analyses based on GEM’s data.
- Assessing the environmental and social impacts of energy projects.
- Updating dashboards and tools based on GEM’s data, as needed.
- Collaborating with other GEM staff members across different project areas.
- Miscellaneous support for other GEM projects as needed.
Education & Experience

The following experience and skills are required for this position:
- Fluency in English and Arabic.
- At least 1 year of experience in energy/environmental research.
The following experience and skills are desired for this position:
- Basic GIS skills.
- Basic coding skills/experience organizing and analyzing large datasets.
- Background knowledge of/experience with the energy sector and/or energy and climate change NGO community.
- Demonstrated analytical experience, including experience in summarizing and presenting data.
- Professional-level writing skills.
- Strong research skills, including attention to detail, scrupulous adherence to documented fact, resourcefulness in using online search tools, and basic knowledge of environmental and social impacts of fossil energy production, governmental and business institutional structures, and the global political context of energy.
- Demonstrated facility with computers, software.
- Demonstrated ability to master additional technical skills as needed for data development and analysis.
- Commitment to social and environmental justice.
Pay and Benefits
This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week, work-from-home position. The pay rate is $37.58 per hour for locations in the United States.
