Job Purpose

Perform wet and dry chemical analysis using spectrophotometry, spectrometry, and chromatograph. Collect, analyze and summarize data in a timely manner to support the objectives of the assigned projects. Supervise the day-to-day activity in the laboratory ensuring that all laboratory supplies/chemicals are available; machine/laboratory apparatus are in good running condition and make decisions for adjustment to ensure that all analysis will be completed as planned. Conduct research experiments as needed by the project.
 
This position will be based at the IRRI Headquarters, Los Baños, Philippines and may only be filled by permanent citizens of the Philippines.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Under the guidance of the Associate Scientist and other senior team members will provide SIRS-Climate adaptive Farming Systems-Climate Change sub-unit by performing wet and dry chemical analysis of experiment materials (soil, plant, gas) using spectrophotometric, spectrometric, chromatographic methods
  • Conduct lab, greenhouse, or field-scale experiments in accordance to agreed research outline, guidelines and protocols
  • Explore and develop other high throughput method for routine analysis.
  • Work closely and consistently communicate with the supervisor to ensure that experiment objectives and activities are met in agreed time-frame
  • Lead and supervise RTs and several service providers in conducting soil sampling in the field and greenhouse experiments
  • Provide feedback to the work of research technicians to ensure that research activities are implemented according to plan and standards
  • Coordinate with different IRRI service units to ensure ample and timely supply of materials (lab consumables, reagents) as well as in the proper handling and maintenance of research areas and technical equipment
  • Collect, analyze and summarize data generated from analyses
  • Ensure timely and accurate submission of datasets to support project objectives.
  • Prepare materials and equipment needed for laboratory experiments/analysis (e.g. reagents, stock solutions, solvents) following standard protocols
  • Contribute to the writing of manuscripts and articles for annual reports and publications in refereed journals as well as presentations and posters to be used in national and international conferences
  • Contribute to the verification and application of methods/techniques that would aid in the successful execution of the experiment/activity

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry
  • Minimum of 2 years of work experience in relevant rice research

  • Proven technical proficiency analytical techniques as spectroscopy and chromatography
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Knowledge/Experience in wet and dry chemistry analysis

  • Knowledge in chemical handling, safety, and regulation compliance
