The Department of Archaeology and Classical Studies consists of six sections: Archaeology, Stockholm Numismatic Institute, Archaeological Research Laboratory, Osteoarchaeological Research Laboratory, Classical Archaeology and Ancient History, and Centre for Palaeogenetics. At the department, research is conducted in several different fields and the study programmes have a wide disciplinary profile.

The Stockholm Numismatic Institute with a professorship in numismatics and monetary history, established in 1979, is fully funded with funds from the Gunnar Ekström Foundation for numismatic research. The group consists of the professorship, as well as an editorial secretary (75 %). The activities are mainly focused on the 700,000 coins from the beginning of our era to the end of the 1700s that have been found in Sweden.

Project description
260,000 coins from the Viking Age are recorded in Sweden. Among them are 82,000 Islamic coins, and they form an important source material for the study of the Swedish Viking-Age society. The Swedish finds are part of a larger picture in northern Europe. The aim of this project is to make this material available through publication of the finds and research into their economic, political and social context. The position is organized in collaboration with the National Historical Museum, that holds many of the finds to be studied and published. The position is placed at the Stockholm Numismatic Institute.

Main responsibilities
The position is directed towards find identification and publication as well as research. The main tasks will be to identify dirhams found in Sweden, publish them and do research that can increase our understanding of the dirham import to and use in the Baltic area and Scandinavia.

Qualification requirements
Researchers are appointed primarily for purposes of research and must hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
Basis for the assessment will be the applicant’s academic ability as demonstrated through her/his own knowledge of the material and original research and scientific publications within the area and period which the research will deal with. We will especially consider the research plan for the position, where the applicant will outline her/his intentions of the employment. Applicants with a degree in archaeology, history or another relevant subject will be preferred.

Terms of employment
This is a full-time, indefinite-term position with a six-month trial period. Start date 2024-03-01 or as per agreement.
