Internews South Sudan is seeking a Lead Researcher for one rapid Information Ecosystem Assessment in Wedweil, Northern Bahr-el-Ghazel, and for two brief follow-up assessments in Renk and Malakal, Upper Nile State. These assessments form part of a WFP-funded project supporting their efforts to strengthen Accountability to Affected Populations, which is run by Internews and its two partners, Community Engagement Network (CEN) and The Radio Community (TRC). Information Ecosystem Assessments are a way to understand the supply and demand components of the information environment in which people live, their information needs, gaps and preferences. Internews has an Information Ecosystem Framework to support this process.

The researcher will be expected to:

  • Working with Internews, CEN and TRC, identify research questions for these assessments.
  • Modify existing community assessment tools (survey, KII and FGD) for context and specific areas of focus and support any needed translation. We expect to run a community level survey only in one location.
  • Work with partners to identify and train enumerators on data gathering tools and methods.
  • Supervise data gathering in the three locations, including any transcription and translation needed.
  • Compile data and do quantitative and qualitative data analysis.
  • Write assessment reports, including feedback from data gathering teams, and Internews, CEN and TRC staff.
  • Produce final assessment reports and present as needed to the humanitarian community in South Sudan.
  • This project may require some travel to Wedweil, Renk or Malakal to collaborate with Internews, CEN and TRC teams.

The ideal candidate or team will have the following qualifications:

  • Experience with research in communities in South Sudan, ideally in displaced and refugee communities.
  • Understanding of survey development and sampling methodologies as well as basic quantitative analysis
  • Understanding of qualitative analysis methods, including focus group methodologies.
  • Strong writing skills
  • Demonstrated experience in humanitarian research methods and practices
  • Knowledge of Arabic and other local languages is a significant asset
  • Knowledge of information ecosystems is an asset
