Researcher position: Invertebrate protein biochemistry
There is a vacancy for a 2-year Researcher position at the Michael Sars Centre (www.sars.no/ ) in the research group of Dr. Timothy Lynagh. The position is funded by Michael Sars Centre core funding. The Centre belongs to the University of Bergen and is a partner of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) www.embl.de/ . The place of work will be at the Michael Sars Centre. The preferred starting time is May – September 2024.
About the project/work tasks:
Work in the Lynagh group focuses on the evolution, function, and pharmacology of ligand-gated ion channels, receptors that mediate rapid communication between neurons, using molecular phylogenetics, mutagenesis, chemical biology, and electrophysiology. One research stream in the lab is identifying and characterizing novel proteins in invertebrates, with a view towards understanding and exploiting protein evolution to develop pharmacological ideas and tools. This will involve cloning, measuring gene expression, and analysing protein structure and function in vitro and in vivo. It is expected that the successful applicant also collaborates with other members of the workgroup, including students and postdocs.
For periods, work must be done on weekends and outside normal working hours depending on project development, e.g. for cell or animal culture.
Qualifications and personal qualities:
- The applicant must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree in protein biochemistry or a related field (e.g. structural biology, pharmacology, etc) or must have submitted his/her doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
- Experience with molecular biology is a requirement, e.g. PCR, cloning, and gel electrophoresis.
- Experience measuring gene expression and/or manipulation is a requirement, e.g. in situ hybridization, immunohistochemistry, transcriptomics, or knockdowns, etc.
- Evidence for studying protein function is a requirement. This should come in the form of previous publications in respected peer-reviewed journals showing e.g. protein purification, e.g. assessing protein structure and function via functional assays and mutagenesis, etc.
- Experience working with invertebrate organisms is an advantage.
- Experience studying evolution is an advantage, e.g. comparative physiology or molecular phylogenetics.
- Evidence for collaborating with others and teaching junior lab members is an advantage.
- Applicants must have excellent skills in oral and written English.
- Evidence for communicating results effectively (e.g. writing articles, presenting work at conferences) is an advantage.
Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.
Special requirements for the position:
The University of Bergen is subjected to the regulation for export control system. The regulation will be applied in the processing of the applications.
We can offer:
- A good and professionally stimulating working environment.
- Position as researcher (code 1109 in the basic collective agreement) and a gross annual salary of NOK 615 700 (equivalent to pay grade 63) upon appointment. Further increases in salary are made according to length of service in the position. A higher salary may be considered for a particularly well-qualified applicant.
- Enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund
- Good welfare benefits
Your application must include:
- a brief account of the applicant’s research interests and motivation for applying for the position.
- the application cover letter, in English, must explain your interest in this workgroup and how your skillset matches the position.
- the names and contact information for two referees. One of these should be the main advisor from the PhD programme.
- CV
- transcripts and diplomas. If you have not yet completed your PhD degree, please submit a statement from your institution confirming that the thesis has been submitted.
- relevant certificates/references
- list of any works of a scientific nature (publication list)
- publications (as applicable)
The application and appendices with certified translations into English or a Scandinavian language must be uploaded at JobbNorge.
Applications by e-mail only will not be considered.
