If you like canoeing, stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, swimming, and teaching kids about the outdoors, our Res Camp team is looking for a responsible, fearless leader to” run the ship” at our Boulder Reservoir camp this summer. The Res Summer Camp Lead will have the responsibility of supervising and mentoring all camp staff at the Reservoir, as well as the supervision of the camp participants. The Res Summer Camp Lead will help plan and lead water sport activities and provide instruction for youth while ensuring all policies and procedures are being followed. Boulder Parks and Recreation is dedicated to supporting youth in a camps and programs to have a safe, fun, and fulfilling summer camp experiences. The Camp and Program Staff Lead will be directly supervised by a Program Coordinator, working closely with them to support our growing number of youth in camp settings.
This job is a seasonal position with full time hours offered in the summer. Throughout the year, there are opportunities to be part of our school day off camps and year-round programs.
Job Description:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Teamwork and ability to lead other staff members:
- Coordinating camp groups.
- Discussing rules, regulations and accommodations for youth with camp/program staff.
- Supervising, educating, and modeling for staff on group management, leadership, and behavior support.
- Creating a positive relationship and good communication with the participants, parents, staff, and program coordinators.
Monitoring participants to ensure their safety:
- Ensuring the safety and guidance of participants and staff in inclusive program environments.
- Assessing and making decisions in emergency situations.
- Administering first aid and contacting medical assistance when necessary.
- Implementing and overseeing participant inclusion support and accommodations.
Great communication skills:
- Greeting participants and parents as they arrive to camps and programs.
- Checking in with the families. Ability to create a positive relationship with the families and participants. Addressing any concerns in a solution-focused and positive manner.
- Ability to teach staff how to implement group management, modifications, and accommodations.
- Working closely with the staff to ensure all participants are being included.
Managing the Day-to-Day operations of Camps & Programs:
- Managing daily operations for camps & programs with the support of the program coordinator.
- Ensuring program quality. Addressing concerns with staff and supporting them through improvement as needed.
- Following all State Licensing and Boulder County Public Health Policies and Procedures.
- Utilizing computer programs to ensure access to all camper paperwork as needed.
- Being fun and playful with the participants. Getting to know each one to help provide the best support possible.
- Creating and implementing supports such as picture schedules and token economy systems.
- Creating and implementing behavior plans and group management.
- Assisting in equipment management and ensuring proper use of equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must meet State of Colorado School-Age Licensing Qualifications:
- 21 years of age or older.
- A 4-year college degree in recreation, education (elementary or early childhood), or a subject in the human service field; OR 2-years of college training and 6 months of satisfactory and verifiable hours working with children since the age of 18, in the care & supervision of 4 or more children; OR 3 years of verifiable hours working with children since the age of 18, in the care and supervision of 4 of more children and be willing to complete course work applicable to school-age children within the first 9 months of employment.

- Previous camp or recreation program experience.
- Ability to evaluate customer problems and make decisions within guidelines.
- Effective interpersonal skills, including conflict resolution skills.
- Ability and willingness to drive participants and staff in vehicles provided by Boulder Parks & Recreation.
- Tactful and effective communication skills.
- Willingness to attend and keep current on all required trainings, including State of Colorado Child Care requirements.
- Have and maintain acceptable background information, including criminal conviction history.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Previous experience as a State Licensed Camp Director or Inclusion Specialist.
- Experience working with and implementing accommodations for people with disabilities .
- Current Red Cross or equivalent CPR, AED and First Aid Certification.
- Previous experience supervising or training staff, volunteers and groups of participants.
- Knowledge of principles and experience or certification in instructing adaptive sport, recreation or leisure activities.
- Bi-lingual in English/Spanish.
- Beginner skills in American Sign Language.
- Lifeguard certification.
