About Hope Centre:

The Hope Centre is one of three residential rehabilitation facilities operated by Odyssey House Victoria. Using a therapeutic community model, the program offers a holistic treatment experience for those seeking help for problematic drug or alcohol use. To enhance individual motivation for change, the Therapeutic Community combines meaningful work and recreational activities, with therapeutic group work and skills development, in a physically and psychologically safe environment.

About this opportunity:

We are seeking an experienced Registered Nurse to support our new residential withdrawal service through the application of related nursing interventions to clients within our Therapeutic Community at Hope Centre!

You will work within a multidisciplinary team and be responsible for the medical management of our client’s alcohol or other drug withdrawal.

You will be required to apply your knowledge and expertise on medication management, opiate assisted therapy (OAT) and other nursing interventions to improve our client’s health status.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Conduct withdrawals from substances in a non-medical environment.
  • Facilitate the commencement and stabilisation of OAT (Opioid Assisted Therapy) with clients who use opioids.
  • Assist clients with OAT conversions i.e. Methadone to Suboxone or Long-Acting Injectable Buprenorphine (LAIB).
  • Provide harm reduction interventions (e.g. safer injecting practices, provision of Naloxone training etc).
  • Provide several evidence-based interventions such as psycho ed, motivational interviewing, mindfulness, basic CBT etc.
  • Work alongside other involved service providers and closely with AOD clinicians to provide wrap around services.
  • Conduct comprehensive AOD assessments as required.
  • Contribute to a dynamic and evolving AOD treatment plan guided by the client and the GP.
  • Develop close connections with pharmacotherapy networks and access to DACAS (Addiction Medicine Specialists – AMS).
  • Contribute to the achievement of quality improvement, both in terms of individual and program performance by encouraging an environment where high quality work is achieved and supported by the adherence to / development of quality systems documentation.

  • Monitor, support and assess withdrawal needs.
  • Participated in activities, meal times and meetings with residents.
  • Working in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders to support withdrawal plan.
  • Facilitating education, therapy, and conflict resolution groups.

Key Selection Criteria:

We are looking for an individual who can apply best practice clinical and health care processes in the treatment of alcohol and drug addiction.

To be successful in this role, you must have:

  • Relevant Tertiary Nursing qualification (Div 1) and registration with the Australia Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Certificate IV in AOD or have completed the required competencies* (or able to complete within the first 12 months of employment) and competencies in dual diagnosis (or able to complete within the first 24 months of employment).
  • Well-developed nursing skills, including comprehensive assessment, crisis intervention, problem-solving, conflict resolution, decision-making, goal setting, case planning, development, monitoring, and evaluation.
  • Experience with the provision of nursing interventions with people who use drugs and alcohol and are withdrawing from use.
  • Sound understanding of alcohol and other drug withdrawal, overdose, and intoxication.
  • Sound knowledge of evidence based AOD interventions, such as harm reduction principles, motivational interviewing etc.
  • Experience working with complex clients.
  • Experience with the provision of providing in the home or outreach services.
