Mission and objectives

UNICRI is a United Nations entity established in 1968 and mandate to assist intergovernmental, governmental and non-governmental organizations in formulating and implementing improved policies in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. The Institute strongly emphasizes action-oriented analysis and integrated technical assistance. The current priorities are justice reform, financial and emerging crimes and security governance. UNICRI, as part of the European Union’s (EU) CBRN Risk Mitigation Centres of Excellence (CoE) Initiative, has developed the Prosecutor’s Guide to Radiological and Nuclear (RN). The final, English version of the book is planned to be published during the second quarter of 2024.

Context

The draft of the Prosecutor’s Guidebook to Radiological and Nuclear Crime will be reverted from the A4 format to A5 by the UNICRI designer. A volunteer will assist in reviewing the text and other visual content of the guidebook. The initial draft of the book is in A4 format and comprises 180 pages, which is approximately 360 pages in A5 format. The expected start date of the collaboration is 1 April 2024.

Task description

We are seeking Online Volunteer/s to review and control the quality of the English version of the Prosecutor’s Guide to Radiological and Nuclear Crimes. He/she will assist in reviewing the text and other visual content of the English version of the Prosecutor’s Guidebook to Radiological and Nuclear Crimes. Specifically, the tasks include: Proofreading: o Thoroughly review the text of the Prosecutors Guidebook on Radiological and Nuclear crimes for typographical errors, grammatical mistakes, and other language-related issues. o Identify and correct the inconsistencies, errors, line breaks, and other mistakes in the text, based on the original text in Word Format. o Ensure consistency in language usage, style, and formatting throughout the document. Graphic Elements: o Check captions, labels, and descriptions for photos, charts, and graphics to ensure accuracy and clarity. o Verify that the graphical elements align with the corresponding textual content. Collaboration with Designer: o Work closely with the designer to address and rectify any identified issues, ensuring a seamless integration of text and graphics. o Provide constructive feedback on layout and design elements for improved visual appeal and user experience. Consistency Check: o Ensure consistency in the use of fonts, font sizes, arrows, text color, and formatting styles across the entire guidebook. o Verify that the overall visual presentation aligns with established design standards. Communication: o Maintain clear and open communication with the designer to discuss corrections, suggestions, and improvements. Collaborate effectively to achieve a polished and error-free final product. Volunteers will collaborate closely with the UNICRI Team, working under the guidance of the editor/designer.

Requirements

Required experience

o Strong proficiency in the English language with a keen eye for detail. o Previous experience in proofreading, editing, or a related field is preferred. o Familiarity with interpreting and verifying information presented in text and graphical formats. o Ability to ensure the coherence of visual elements with the accompanying text. Attention to Detail: o Exceptional attention to detail to identify and rectify typographical and formatting errors. o Commitment to delivering a high-quality, error-free final product. Communication Skills: o Excellent communication skills to convey feedback and collaborate with the designer and project manager. o Ability to provide clear explanations for suggested corrections. Time Management: o Demonstrated ability to manage time efficiently and meet deadlines. o Flexibility to adapt to potential revisions or updates in the document. Software Proficiency: o Familiarity with common word processing software and tools for collaborative online work.
