We have a strong corporate agenda that ensures we create a positive and inclusive working environment where everyone is valued for their contribution.The UK Mission to the European Union (UKMIS) which is a part of a world-wide network of nearly 270 Diplomatic Posts, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas is now looking for a Rights and Justice Policy Officer.The successful candidate will lead the work of the UK Mission to the EU on a range of high profile rights and justice policy issues including in relation to citizens’ rights derived from the UK’s Withdrawal Agreement with the EU, data protection, and civil justice cooperation. The role sits within the wider UKMIS Justice Team, responsible also for criminal justice cooperation.The role encompasses:The role holder will be expected to monitor, analyse and advise in relation to UK-EU relations in respect of the rights afforded to UK and EU nationals respectively in the Withdrawal Agreement (‘citizens rights’), data protection and justice policy, with a focus on civil judicial cooperation/private international law. They may also be expected to support wider priorities of the JHA (Justice and Home Affairs) team as required.The successful candidate will be prepared to build networks quickly, investing in relationships with UK Government colleagues and external partners, including the wider community in Brussels. They will also be enthusiastic to develop subject matter expertise in the areas within their portfolio.This role will provide the opportunity to work on high-profile issues, with a great deal of political interest, and gain exposure to senior level UK Government colleagues at the UK Mission and in London. The ideal candidate would be someone who is a good communicator, able to deliver at pace and is able to deliver effectively by prioritising workload and juggling competing demands during busy periods. They will need to be flexible about the exact nature of the work, and so will need to be able to adapt to changing priorities and developments.Essential qualifications, skills and experienceOur ideal candidate has:
- Proficiency in written and spoken English (C1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
- A self-starter, demonstrating a flexible, pro-active attitude
- A strong team player with good people skills, strong ability to network and interact
- Ability to prioritise, effectively manage and execute multiple and competing tasks within the agreed deadlines
- Strong drafting skills
- Full proficiency in MS Office applications
Desirable qualifications, skills and experienceGood to have:
- Experience working on justice, data protection and/or human rights
- Experience of, or familiarity with, the EU and its institutions
- Experience of working with UK Government departments
- Proficiency in written and spoken French(C1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

In addition, we offer an extensive salary package, which includes a 13th month, luncheon vouchers, pension scheme, optional hospitalisation insurance (subject to monthly employee contribution), reimbursement of public transport and a lot more. We offer more days of annual leave than the Belgian requirements.Please note that Belgian nationals will be paid their salary gross and are expected to comply with their tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the Belgian authorities. Non-Belgian nationals will receive their salary net, minus the deduction of an equivalent level of Belgian tax retained at source.
