Position description

Kamara is a social enterprise that supports partners working to promote social justice to grow stronger by navigating the risks they face. We work with organisations engaging with topics ranging from equality to climate justice and with different profiles (from grassroots to funders). We provide them with access to expertise and support that will improve their holistic security, knowledge-based strategic decision-making and, ultimately, contribute to improving their resilience for achieving their vision.

Role

The risk management specialist is responsible for providing support to individuals, organisations and movements from a holistic security perspective in order to improve their operational security management. The role requires both ability to work within a framework as well as innovatively, spanning from conducting risk assessments and facilitating workshops through to 1:1 and group capacity-strengthening (ToT). Travel for local work is required however most is remote.

What We Are Looking For

The role is suited to candidates with strong technical capacities and lived experience. Our approach is strongly relational and experience in the field with diverse cultures is valuable for both aligning with our methodologies and being able to calibrate with the realities of the needs and expectations of those we support.

Our model is to work with organisations over a longer period of time rather than a one-off training and candidates should be committed to tailoring their approach around concepts that aim to strengthen capacity at local level within the individuals, communities or organisations we work with in order for support solutions to be sustainable.

We believe a well-rounded and balanced team is made up of diverse people that bring different perspectives and experiences to contribute.

Responsibilities & Tasks:

  • Create or review holistic security risk management frameworks appropriate for organisations, individuals, communities and donors

  • Conduct research (e.g. context analysis, stakeholder and threat mapping)

  • Facilitate workshops, both virtual and in-person, to support implementation of mitigation measures

  • Build from existing organisational/individual knowledge to devise and deliver security management plans, protocols, and implementation support

  • Further develop our risk management curriculum and training modules

  • Identify and capacity-strengthen local coordinators and/or pro-actively foster local support networks

It is essential that candidates have:

  • Minimum three years of practical operational experience of risk mitigation in the field

  • The ability to adapt risk mitigation strategies to the realities on the ground: we work with many individuals and groups who simply do not necessarily have access to the type of resource-support or infrastructure that large NGO or the humanitarian aid sector have and we need someone who can adapt appropriately to customise for the different types of partners we support

  • Cultural and gender awareness and sensitivity, experience working with multicultural partners

  • Fluency in English (both written and spoken)

  • Fluency in Spanish (both written and spoken)

  • Ability to work across multiple time zones (from SE Asia to LATAM)

  • Ability to travel

The candidate must also have at least one of the following preferred experiences:

  • Experience in design and development of training programs, and in the delivery of diverse training methods or activities (e.g. scenario-based simulations, mentoring, on-the-job training) including virtual and in-person

  • Lived-experience of social justice initiatives

  • Professional qualifications and certificates in risk management and/or facilitation

  • Additional languages (Portuguese preferred)

Terms

An initial 1 year fixed-term consultancy (subject to standard probation and termination provisions) with the potential to evolve into a full-time permanent position. Consideration of permanent agreement from the outset for certain jurisdictions. Remuneration will be commensurate to level of experience but range between $USD55-75,000 per annum equivalent.
