The Risk Manager ensures a structured, dynamic, integrated and professional approach to risk
management organisation wide. This role will be responsible for ensuring that all functions and
operating regions understand their risk profile and manage risk within the risk appetite of the Board
of Trustees.

Scope of work
The Risk Manager will contribute risk-based information, aligned with the Risk Management Policy, to
support Malaria Consortium’s Global Management Group in making decisions whilst supporting the
Chief Executive to provide risk assurance to the Finance, Audit, Risk Committee (FARC) of the Board.
The postholder will be pivotal in setting up an organisation-wide risk management system and
promoting a positive risk culture.

Key working relationships

  • Works closely with and reports to the Chief Executive (CE)
  • Works closely with members of the Global Management Group (GMG), namely the DirectorGlobal Operations Support and Asia, Regional Programmes Director for West and Central Africa,
  • the Regional Programmes Director for East and Southern Africa, Technical Director, Human
  • Resource Director, Finance Director, and Development Director
  • Works closely with the two Regional Risk and Programmes Managers and the Global Directors
  • of multi-country programmes, such as the SMC Programme
  • Liaises with country senior management teams in all country locations
  • Liaises with the Internal audit team
  • Externally the postholder will periodically liaise with counterparts in partner organisations,
  • regulators and funding entities
Key accountabilities
Strategic contributions (10%)
  • Input to organisational and functional strategy and policies development from the risk
  • management perspective
  • Support the CE and FARC to update and maintain the risk management policy, risk appetite and
  • other tools in the risk management framework
Risk management contributions (70%)
  • Develop, implement, and maintain a risk management framework to identify, analyze, and
  • mitigate potential risks
  • To maintain the UK/Global level risk registers and produce risk reporting as appropriate
  • To provide practical interpretation, application, and mitigation of risk to resolve issues raised
  • across the organisational matrix structure comprising functions and regions
  • To build effective and supportive relationships with senior leadership across all locations to
  • facilitate and develop a positive risk culture
  • Conduct regular risk assessments and audits to evaluate the effectiveness of risk mitigation
  • measures and compliance with relevant standards and produce actionable reports
  • Coordinate with the functions and regions to ensure a unified, integrated and dynamic
  • approach to risk management, promoting a culture of risk awareness
  • Engage with key internal and external stakeholders to understand their expectations and ensure
  • that risk management initiatives meet and exceed these expectations
  • Identify and utilize relevant and affordable technologies to enhance risk analysis and reporting
  • processes
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, learning, and excellence within the organisational

  • Monitor and ensure compliance with relevant UK/Global level regulatory, safety, and quality

Business Development & growth (10%)
  • Facilitate, enable and support colleagues at senior and middle levels in developing a culture of
  • continuous horizon scanning for emerging risks, threats and opportunities
  • Ensure effective risk management is embedded into new business development proposals
Capacity Development (10%)
  • Design and facilitate risk management training to staff, senior managers, GMG and the Board
  • Act as the expert on all aspects of the risk management process and advise on the appropriate
  • and effective management of various risk management tools across Malaria Consortium
  • Be a champion for best practice in risk management and for the promotion and embedding of
  • a risk-aware culture whereby risk identification, assessment and management are viewed
  • positively as drivers for Malaria Consortium’s mission success
  • Person specification
Qualifications and experience:
Essential
  • Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management, Business, or a related field
  • Experience of risk management at middle level in a large or complex organisation
  • Experience of identifying and managing risk in a complex context
  • Experience of delivering priority work within strict timelines
  • Experience in leveraging technology to enhance risk analysis and reporting.
  • Experience of undertaking analysis of data, correlating multiple sources of data and producing
  • informative reports
  • Postholder must have right to work in the country based
Desirable
  • Professional certification in risk management
  • Experience working in a multi-cultural and/or global organisation
  • Experience of working in the charity sector
  • Experience of risk management requirements of the UK Charity Commission
  • Experience of developing and delivering training packages using excellent presentation skills
Work-based skills:
Essential
  • Excellent understanding of risk management
  • Able to develop effective tools and approaches to risk management in a global charitable
  • organisation, such as Malaria Consortium
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, and the ability to communicate complex
