The Rural Estates Operative is accountable to the Rural Estate Ecological Officer for the
practical aspects of conservation and rural management across the Dstl Porton Down estate and
specifically on the Site of Special Scientific Interest, (SSSI) Special Protection Area (SPA)
and Special Area of Conservation (SAC) in line with legislation and Dstl Policy.

In this role you will:
- Scrub clearance & topping of scrub
- Management of farmland biodiversity areas including pollinator and bird crops
- Create and manage conservation projects
- Conservation woodland management
- Hedge cutting, management and planting
- Maintenance of rabbit, plot/species protection and stock fencing
- Herbicide spraying
- Range track maintenance
- Minor repairs to the site perimeter fencing
- General support for conservation activities including assisting with ecological monitoring.
You will use safe working practices ensuring that you and your colleagues report on any unsafe
practices, no matter how big or small. You will, follow safety guidelines, respecting and
contributing to a strong Dstl safety culture.
Important Information
Our work in defence, security and intelligence requires our employees to be UK Nationals who
are able to gain a high level of security clearance to undertake the projects we are involved

This role will require full UK security clearance and you should have resided in the UK for the
past 5 years. For some roles Developed Vetting will also be required, in this case you should

Person specification
We are looking for someone who has:
- Experience of working on or with a working farm or, land management operations.
- Knowledge of the basic aspects of conservation and rural management and willingness to
increase skills where required. - Desire to develop their understanding of the rural estate and further their career in a
unique environment. - Ability to obtain additional qualifications and skills to enable them to carry out their
role and support the Senior Rural Estate Ranger. - Have an understanding of Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), Special Protection
Area (SPA) and Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and legislation and how they can effect
management.
