Our division is comprised of leading student affairs experts who support our campus on pressing student life matters including public service, health, wellness, social justice, residential living, food services, sports, recreation, career services, and student activities and organizations including sorority and fraternity life. We provide support and services to roughly 25,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students on multiple campuses in the U.S. and abroad.

   

As a part of the SCL Office of the Vice President’s unit, the SCL Facilities team supports the student campus experience, by ensuring safe, clean, and operational spaces for students to live, learn, eat, recreate, connect, and engage with each other. With this mission in mind, the team is focused on helping our customers and end-users navigate critical decisions regarding the use and maintenance of their space. They do this through analyzing risks and associated costs, exploring additional services that add value, considering safety and security factors, and ensuring business continuity. Members of this group are passionate about customer service, assess small decisions that can have large impacts, and seamlessly integrate people and physical space. This team is literally the “foundation” upon which the student experience here at Cornell is built.

The Golf Course Crew Leader leads, schedules and executes property maintenance and course setup for the Cornell’s Robert Trent Jones 18-hole golf course. This position leads the efforts and assigns tasks to their team to help support the preventive and routine maintenance, as well as the repairs of necessary equipment, that ensures the safe and consistent conditioning of the golf course and surrounds which include tasks such as, but not limited to, mowing, trimming, fertilizing, removing debris, and course set-up. Additionally, this position routinely checks functionality, schedules and services the golf course irrigation system to ensure the growth of healthy turf. As the crew leader, this role will serve as a mentor periodically spot-checking the work of their team to ensure instructions are being followed, work is progressing according to schedule, and material/equipment are being used properly bringing any concerns forward to the Facilities Manager. The crew lead may also be asked to provide event coverage that includes working early mornings, evenings and weekends.

A Successful Golf Grounds Crew Leader will:

  • Promote a customer-service driven culture and possess a commitment to learning and instructing others in a team-oriented way

  • Demonstrate excellent organizational and time management skill in order to manage multiple competing priorities with tight deadlines  

  • Possess effective interpersonal and customer service skills to clearly communicate both verbally and in writing with a variety of customers, and be poised to serve as a good steward of the university.

  • Contain a strong work ethic and the ability to carry out tasks and responsibilities with little direct supervision.

  • Be detail oriented, attentive, and maintain consistency to ensure and enhance the safe use of the golf course facilities. 

Required Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent, with a minimum of 4 years’ experience with golf course maintenance and/or construction including plant nutrition, cultivation, irrigation management, and golf course setup.

  • Demonstrated experience installing and maintaining golf course irrigation

  • Experience operating hand and motorized equipment such as commercial mowers, trimmers, mid-size tractors, front-end loader, and turf machinery such as top dresser, grass groomer, and aerators.

  • Must possess a valid New York State driver’s license with no major driving violations and be able to obtain & maintain Cornell’s driving certification. Must be comfortable driving a large truck and trailer combination as well as safely operate truck under inclement weather conditions; may be required to operate a motor vehicle (your own vehicle or Cornell-owned) to travel to/from job sites.

  • NYS pesticide applicator’s license category 3a required or its acquisition within 3 years of employment.

Physical Requirements include: Must be able to lift 50 lbs. occasionally and up to 100 lbs. (minimal). Must be able to reach over your head, and perform various lifting, pulling and pushing operations as well as stand for long periods of time, occasional squatting and bending. Must be able to negotiate stairs, ladders and perform rigorous physical work for sustained periods. Must be able to work in all weather conditions and extremes temperatures for extended periods. Must be free of debilitating dust, pollen or bee allergies, or have the ability to manage such allergy.
