Job Title: Safeguarding Expert Consultant
The American Bar Association, Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) is committed to protecting its staff, associates, participants of activities, and other stakeholders from harm, whether the harm is causes intentionally or unintentionally, directly or indirectly. This includes sexual exploitation, sexual abuse, sexual harassment, and child abuse. When harm occurs, ABA ROLI is committed to responding in appropriate ways. ABA ROLI seeks to engage a safeguarding expert consultant in support of the implementation of the ABA ROLI-wide Safeguarding Policy, and Code of Conduct to ensure that all programs adhere to the Do No Harm principles, follow best practices regarding safeguarding, and are trauma-informed. This includes supporting programs or offices in putting measures in place to minimize and mitigate risks.
The ideal candidate may be located anywhere in the world, will possess expert knowledge in working on safeguarding people and communities, and should have experience working with a variety of stakeholders, such as governments, civil society organizations, and community leaders.

Description of Consultancy
The purpose of this call is to provide ABA ROLI with a qualified consultant to provide technical expertise to ABA ROLI programs as needed.
The ideal candidate will possess expert knowledge of Safeguarding principles and practices, as well as the specific challenges of Safeguarding children in humanitarian settings. This knowledge should include current research, and international trends.
The Expert Consultant will work under the overall technical supervision of the ABA ROLI Senior Gender, Equity, and Social Inclusion Technical Advisor and the direct supervision of a Program Management Unit Lead, in close collaboration with the ABA ROLI Chief of Party in the relevant country of assignment.
Desired Experience and Qualifications
- University degree in or equivalent experience in international human rights law, international relations, development studies, social work, gender studies, or psychology.
- At least five years of relevant experience in Safeguarding.
- Experience developing safeguarding policies and/ or implementing those at the field level.
- Experience working with a variety of stakeholders, including governments, and civil society organizations.
- Relevant experience in different geographical areas.
- Working knowledge in English, French, Spanish, Arabic, or Russian.
