Saltwater is currently recruiting a qualified Salmon Habitat Restoration Junior Scientist within the Northwest Fisheries Science Center. This is an ongoing, full-time position based in Seattle, WA, and the position is to be backfilled immediately.

The Fish Ecology (FE) Division at the Northwest Fisheries Science Center conducts scientific research on threatened and endangered salmon populations in the Pacific Northwest and California, including watershed assessments to aid in restoration planning and habitat monitoring, to meet NMFS statutory obligations under the Endangered Species Act. The Salmon Habitat Restoration Junior Scientist will assist with habitat analyses and development of salmon life cycle models to help managers identify and prioritize habitat restoration actions for salmon and steelhead. The analyses will focus on collection of habitat and/or fish data in river basins and nearshore waters of the Western Region.

Duties

  • Produce an eLibrary of salmon ecology relationships (SER) to support life cycle modeling (LCM).
  • Engage with life cycle modelers, users, and salmon co-managers to ensure that the eLibrary will serve as a respected and well-used source of information about SER
  • Assist with gathering of landscape and habitat data for habitat change assessments, including, but not limited to, existing suitable data sets.
  • Conduct habitat change analysis (historical and current habitat conditions) to develop habitat scenarios for life cycle models.
  • Assist with gathering of fish population data, including, but not limited to, existing data sets for life cycle model development.
  • Adapt or revise previously developed life cycle models for river basins in the Pacific Northwest, and run alternative habitat scenarios for habitat restoration planning.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher, from an accredited college or university with a major directly related in a field of study as related to the requirements of specific task order with emphasis in fisheries, geology, natural science, hydrology or environmental sciences.
  • Three (3) years of experience including a majority of the following:
    • Familiarity with Pacific salmon life cycle and natural and anthropogenic threats
    • Familiarity with life cycle, individual-based, or systems ecology models
    • Experience conducting scientific literature reviews
    • Database management and data organization skills
    • Familiarity with at least one computer programming language such as R
    • Ability to prepare presentations, reports, manuscripts, and visualizations
    • Ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team and to perform independent research
