Sanctuary Manager
The International Crane Foundation (ICF) is dedicated to the conservation of cranes and their habitats worldwide. We work collaboratively with global partners to protect these magnificent birds through research, education, and community engagement. Our mission is driven by a commitment to biodiversity and a passion for wildlife conservation. ICF is seeking a dedicated and skilled Sanctuary Manager to lead restoration and land stewardship at the 1,150-acre Wolfberry Whooping Crane Sanctuary on the Texas Gulf Coast. This position plays a vital role in advancing ICF’s mission by ensuring high-quality habitat for endangered Whooping Cranes and a diversity of grassland- and wetland-dependent species, including grassland birds and shorebirds. This is a full-time, onsite employment opportunity in Calhoun County, TX. We offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes health, dental, and vision insurance, 401(k) with employer contributions, generous paid time off, and additional perks designed to support work-life balance and well-being. Salary will be discussed during the interview process and is commensurate on experience and qualifications.
About the Role
The Sanctuary Manager is responsible for day-to-day management of the property and for implementing the site management plan using an adaptive management approach. Restoration activities include prescribed fire, herbicide applications, and mechanical treatments to control woody plant encroachment and restore coastal prairie and wetland ecosystems. The position also involves maintaining roads, firebreaks, equipment, and future site management headquarters buildings.
Working closely with the Director of Gulf Coast Programs and other ICF staff, the Sanctuary Manager will plan and lead habitat management activities, track vegetation and avian responses to inform management decisions, and manage invasive species. The role includes overseeing volunteers and seasonal staff during restoration projects, supporting on-site monitoring and research, and serving as a representative of ICF by providing tours to partners, supporters, and the public.
Qualifications
Qualified candidates will have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a biological or environmental science field-or equivalent experience in wildlife conservation, ecology, natural resources, hydrology, or a related discipline. Required experience includes grassland and wetland restoration techniques, invasive species management, prescribed fire implementation, and operating and maintaining tractors or other heavy equipment. A valid state driver’s license and acceptable driving record are required. Candidates with National Wildfire Coordinating Group certifications (Engine Boss or Prescribed Fire Burn Boss Type 2) are desired, but not required.
This position offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful conservation impact on one of the most important landscapes for Whooping Crane recovery.
