Located on a beautiful 136 acre property in the Yarra Valley (60 kilometres from the Melbourne CBD), Worawa Aboriginal College is a secondary boarding school for Aboriginal girls. An Aboriginal initiative, Worawa is an Independent school, owned and governed by Aboriginal people, and operates on a philosophy of ‘Walking Together to Make a Difference’.

A full boarding school, Worawa was established as a response to the needs of Aboriginal adolescents and the difficulties these young people experience in the mainstream educational system. The diversity of Aboriginal Australia is reflected in the student population drawn from communities across the country. Worawa provides a holistic education based on an integrated Education, Culture, and Wellbeing model.

The Role

The Boarding Assistant plays a vital role in ensuring the smooth and efficient functioning of the boarding houses. This position works with staff and boarders to create a positive and nurturing environment and is responsible for assisting with various tasks and activities related to student accommodation, welfare, and supervision.

Boarding staff work across 7 days, shifts are available during weekdays and/or weekends. These are residential positions requiring overnight stay. Whilst on shift, the boarding team are provided with private ensuited accommodation rooms and all meals are included.

The successful applicants will have:

  • Experience in a similar position working with adolescents in a residential environment
  • Diploma (Youth/Social Work, Indigenous Studies) or equivalent experience
  • Solid understanding of Health and Safety requirements including Child Safety regulations
  • Current Working with Children Check and National Criminal History Check
  • First Aid: HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid, HLTAID009 – Provide CPR, Anaphylaxis Awareness training or willing to obtain upon employment
  • A current Victorian Driver’s license
  • Non-Government Schools Protecting Children-Mandatory reporting Certificate to be gained upon employment
  • Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) to be gained within 6 months of appointment if not current

Desirable:

  • Indigenous Cultural Awareness Training
  • De-Escalation and Trauma Informed Training
  • Background in education, health or child development
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are strongly encouraged to apply
