School Programs Coordinator (Marine Science)

Pacific Marine Mammal Center (PMMC) strives to provide world class marine science education which inspires the next generation of scientists and ocean stewards.

We are looking for a dynamic and dedicated individual to join our education team. PMMC offers a great variety of educational programming to a wide range of audiences. We are looking for an enthusiastic team member who can help us take our programs to the next level. We seek someone who can help expand our STEM/NGSS/Ocean Literacy based ocean science activities through curriculum development and implementation. This person will have exceptional and engaging presentation skills, as well as be extremely detail oriented to keep up with a large amount of education program reservations responsibilities.

Primary responsibilities will include cultivating, scheduling, coordinating, delivering our Whales on Wheels school assembly program and our Marine Mammals on the Move classroom program in elementary schools around Orange County. Whales on Wheels features our life-sized inflatable Gray Whale, Winston, that students experience inside and out while teaching about the incredible ecosystem services whales provide the ocean and planet! Marine Mammals on the Move engages students with hands on marine science activities in the classroom, including our mock marine mammal necropsy experience with plush sea lions.

An integral part of this job is developing relationships with different school districts and after school organizations to expand the reach of both programs, not only into classrooms across orange county, but also into those in bordering counties. Other responsibilities include teaching programs onsite at PMMC, conducting outreaches, engaging guests in our visitor yard, and developing new curriculum.

Required skills

• Demonstrated ability to create STEM curriculum aligned with NGSS and Ocean Literacy standards
• Strong understanding of school systems and formal classroom needs
• Proven volunteer and program management skills
• Very detail oriented and organized
• Experience leading both small and large groups with proven child and classroom management skills
• Engaging and dynamic presentation and teaching skills
• Highly proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint
• Able to learn new software expediently

Additional required qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in education, child development, marine biology, or related field
• Experience teaching in a formal and/or informal classroom setting (both is a plus)

*Experience in marine biology or extensive knowledge of marine mammals a plus

*Social media and video editing skills a plus
