Duties and Responsibilities
The Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm (BRS) Conventions was established to support the main goal of the three conventions to protect human health and the environment from the adverse effects of hazardous chemicals and waste. Its principal functions are to make arrangements for, and service meetings of the Conferences of the Parties and other subsidiary bodies under the convention, facilitate assistance to Parties on request, and to coordinate with relevant international bodies. The Science and Technical Assistance Branch is responsible for implementation of the scientific and technical Programme of Work and coordination of the technical assistance programme of the BRS Conventions. Intern will report to Suman Sharma (PMO) STA or other PMOs in the Branch as specified. Technical assistance under BRS conventions; Plastic waste projects; Reporting under the Basel and Stockholm conventions; support in the area of industrial POPs; POPs pesticides, BAT/BEP; Plastic waste and household waste partnerships, etc. Specific tasks the intern will fulfil: – Support on TA coordination related activities that includes updating of the website, etc.; – Support in providing technical assistance under the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions (workshop preparations, data analysis, doing assessments, preparing presentations, evaluation forms, online training etc.); – Support in analysing the results of the TA needs assessment questionnaires, graphs, tables, diagrams, etc.; – Support in the various ongoing and upcoming projects on plastic waste projects; – Support in the work relating to the reporting under Basel and Stockholm Conventions; – Support in the work areas relating to PCB, PBDE, waste containing nanomaterials, synergies and international cooperation; – Support in the work relating to DDT, preparation for expert group meeting/webinars, website updates, note taking, etc.; – Support in the areas of BAT/BEP activities, Chairs’ training and effectiveness evaluation, the works include preparations for face to face and or online meetings/webinars, website updates, expert roster maintenance, preparation of slides, promotional materials, feedback forms, certificates, note taking, onsite support etc.; – Support in the launching of the MOOC, the webinar sessions, and online training on e-waste; – Undertake any other activities related to the implementation of the conventions, as required. – Support in updating information on regional centres; – Support in following up Parties on the transmission of updated NIPs; – Support work related to Harmonized System codes for chemicals and wastes listed under BRS; – Support work related to the Plastic Waste Partnership; – Support related to the Household Waste Partnership
Qualifications/special skills
Masters degree or equivalent. Applicants must be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent)
Languages
English English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
