This is an exciting opportunity to help manage and restore some of California’s premier fisheries, as well our endemic desert fishes. This job will allow you to work in a range of conditions, from the high Sierra to Death Valley as a part of a dynamic fisheries team. Work will include: backpacking; electrofishing; stream diversion; boat and canoe surveys; creel sampling; and laboratory work as required.
The specific work duties will include field work in lakes and streams in California’s eastern Sierra on various fisheries, water quality or habitat tasks, data entry, angler surveys, some GIS work, and will assist in maintaining gear and equipment.
This job entails performing manual labor including, loading and unloading heavy supplies, lifting up to 50 lbs., hiking with a 50 lb. pack for 10 or more miles on uneven terrain, often where no trail exists. Hazards include slippery rocks, rattlesnakes, ticks, high elevation, allergy causing plants, and working with electrofishing equipment where there is a possibility of being shocked. This position includes working weekdays, weekends, nights, and some holidays. Works in adverse weather conditions including, cold, heat, rain, snow, or high winds.
