Offer Description
A call is open for the allocation of 5 (five) Scientific initiation fellowships for students enrolled in Bachelor or Masters programs (BII) within the scope of the Research Project entitled Research Centre in Sports Sciences, Health Sciences and Human Development – Strong Community (CIDESD: UIDB/04045/2020), supported by national funds through the budget of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), taking place at the Research Project entitled Research Centre in Sports Sciences, Health Sciences and Human Development (CIDESD) of the University of Beira Interior (https://www.ubi.pt/entidade/CIDESD ), under the following conditions:
Research Field: Sport Sciences/Health Sciences
Objectives – To complement existing scientific training initiatives within the activities of the STRONG Community and offer R&D internships in teams with on-going research projects in CIDESD.
Work plan:
BII_1 and BII_2: The work to be developed is entitled: “A Technology-Based Psychological Intervention to Improve Young Adult’s Mental Health and Physical Activity: A Gender-Based Study” and aims to evaluate the impact of a technology-based psychological intervention on improving mental health and physical activity of young adults from a gender perspective. The tasks to be carried out involve implementing the intervention, collecting, and processing data, and disseminating the results. The work plan also includes participation in data collection and bibliographic research within the framework of the STRONG Community’s research activities, namely clinical exercise programs.
BII_3 and BII_4: Integrated development of clinical exercise programs
The work plan comprises:
1. Participation in the conceptualization, collection and input of data as part of the STRONG Community’s research activities;
2. Participation in data collection and bibliographic research as part of the STRONG Community’s research activities;
3. Laboratory support in the collection and processing of data as part of research and development projects;
4. Participation in the preparation of documents for the technical and scientific dissemination of the main results of the projects under development in the STRONG. community;
5. Participation in various scientific dissemination events as part of the STRONG community’s activities.
BII_5: Biochemical evaluation of specific factors in the context of clinical exercise programs
The work plan comprises:
1. Participation in the conceptualization, collecting and entering data as part of the STRONG Community’s research activities;
2. Participation in data collection and bibliographic research within the framework of the STRONG Community’s research activities;
3. Laboratory support in the collection and processing of data as part of research and development projects;
4. Participation in the preparation of documents for the technical and scientific dissemination of the main results of the projects under development in the STRONG. community;
5. Participation in various scientific dissemination events as part of the STRONG community’s activities.
Applicable legislation and regulations: Statute for Scientific Research Fellows, approved by Portuguese law nº 40/2004, of 18 of August, in its current form (amended by Decree-Law nº 123/2019, of 28 of August; Regulation of Research Grants of the Foundation for Science and Technology (Regulation nº. 950/2019) published in the Diário da República, 2nd series, nº. 241, 16 December 2019; amended by Regulation nº. 643/2021 published in the Diário da República, 2nd series, n. º 135 of 14 July 2021.
Work location:
BII_1 and BII2: The work will be carried out at the Department of Psychology and Education, Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of the University of Beira Interior, under the scientific supervision of Doctor Henrique Pereira, Full Professor of the same Department.
BII_3 and BII_4: The work will be carried out at the Sports, Health and Human Development Research Centre at the University of Beira Interior, Rua Marquês de Ávila e Bolama, 6201-001 Covilhã, under the scientific supervision of Dr Henrique Pereira Neiva, Assistant Professor at the University of Beira Interior and co-supervision of Dr Dulce Esteves, Associate Professor at the University of Beira Interior.
BII_5: The work will be carried out at the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Beira Interior, under the scientific supervision of Dr Carla Fonseca, Assistant Professor at the University of Beira Interior and co-supervision of Dr Dulce Esteves, Associate Professor at the University of Beira Interior.
Fellowship duration and conditions: The fellowship is for five months, starting on may 2024, and can be renewed for an equal period of time. The activity is in regime of exclusive dedication in accordance with the RBIUBI.

Documents for application: The candidates should present:
- Motivation letter;
- Detailed Curriculum Vitae;
- Proof of enrolment in the 1st 2nd cycle of studies leading to a master’s degree at Universidade da Beira Interior (this can be replaced during the application phase by a declaration on honour);
- Copy of the 1st cycle degree certificate indicating the final classification or copy of the study plan and respective grades; and copy of the study plan and respective grades obtained in the current master’s degree (if applicable).
- Declaration of honour from the candidate stating that he/she meets the conditions for being award the scholarship according to Articles 5, 6 and 7 of the RBIUBI, respectively, for the fellowship of BII typology.
Receipt of applications:
Applications should be addressed to the President of the Jury, Doctor Daniel Marinho and should be sent by registered mail or delivered to the Department of Sport Sciences, Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas – Universidade da Beira Interior, Estrada do Sineiro, s/n, 6200-209 – Covilhã. Applications must be properly identified as “Concurso para atribuição de uma Bolsa de Iniciação à Investigação (BII), no âmbito da Unidade de Investigação – Centro de Investigação em Desporto, Saúde e Desenvolvimento Humano – (CIDESD – UIDP/04045/2020) – STRONG, with the respective field.
Publication/notification of results: The final results of the evaluation process will be published in a sorted list, by the final classification obtained, and posted in a visible and public place of the Department of Sport Sciences of the University of Beira Interior. The candidate(s) will be notified of the decision by e-mail.

Eligibility criteria
To be a student registered in the 1st or 2nd cycle of studies leading to a Bachelor or Master’s degree in Clinical and Health Psychology (BII_1 and BII_2), Sport Sciences (BII_3 and BII_4) or Biomedical Sciences or related areas (Biochemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biotechnology) (BII_5).
The proof of registration in the 1st or 2nd cycle of studies is required for the fellowship contract process.
Selection process
The evaluation of applications will focus on the candidate’s Merit, applying the following evaluation criteria, valued on a scale of 1 to 5 values:
Merit of the candidate – MC (100%).
a) Academic path (which reflects the average grade of the 1st cycle degree and curricular units completed in the current master’s course), with a weighting of 70%;
b) Personal CV (which reflects the scientific and professional career, specifically in the area of work and psychological research), with a weighting of 30%;
The candidate’s merit classification (MC) will be obtained by applying the following formula: MC=(a×0.7)+(b×0.3)

Complaint and Appeal Procedures: After communication of the provisional lists of the results in the different phases of the selection process (Admission and Exclusion, Curricular Evaluation), the candidates have 10 working days to pronounce their disagreement, under the terms of article 121 and following of the Código do Procedimento Administrativo. If any allegations are presented, the final decision will be issued after the analysis of the statements presented during the prior hearing of interested parties. After the statutory deadline of 10 working days, the proposal for the final classification and ranking of the candidates becomes definitive.
