Background
The UN Secretary-General established the UN SDG Action Campaign to inspire people and organizations from all backgrounds and every part of the world to take actions to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. The UN SDG Action Campaign is hosted and supported by UNDP and is based in Bonn (Germany) with a lean team that marshals rapid support for new initiatives as opportunities arise and provides partners with on-demand strategic creative services that inspire SDG action.
The UN SDG Action Campaign is working closely with cities and local governments to showcase how they are actively contributing to implementing Agenda 2030, accelerating transformative action to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals for all, and everywhere. Duties and Responsibilities
The intern, under the guidance and supervision of the Advisor, cities and local government, UN SDG Action Campaign will carry out the following duties and responsibilities:
1. Support knowledge generation on SDG local action
• Conduct research to identify cities and other local governments that are actively contributing with concrete solutions to achieve the SDGs.
• Contribute to creating and sharing knowledge through networks and communities of practice, helping teams and partners learn from each other.
• Assist with communication tasks, such as writing press releases, creating social media posts, and helping organize events to promote UNDP’s work and results.
• Provide new ideas and suggestions on how to engage local governments in our knowledge and learning initiatives. This would encourage creativity, innovation, and proactivity in the intern.
• Identify data for infographics on how cities and local governments are implementing the SDGs. This will help familiarize the intern with data visualization, which is a trend and a priority for UNDP Local Action.
2. Support communications
• Contribute to generate news, stories and other communication assets to be published in the project website.
• Elaborate the project newsletter and increase the project database of local and regional governments contacts.
3. Support UNDP activities during the High Level Political Forum 2025
4. Support the delegation of local and regional governments to the HLPF.
5. Support UNDP contribution to the 8th Local and regional governments forum on 16th July 2025.
Competencies:
- Demonstrates commitment to UN’s mission, vision and values.
- Relevant experience in media event or social media campaign.
- Strong oral and written communication ability in English
- Full proficiency in Microsoft Office software and other online collaborative tools.
- Proactive, organized and self-motivated.
- Be honest, confident, responsible, detail-oriented, patient and skillful in communicating with others.
- Be curious, willing to learn new things as well as share new views with the team.
Required Skills and Experience
Education:
- Major in international relations, social sciences, journalism, communications, marketing, or other relevant fields.
Candidates must meet one of the following educational requirements:
- Enrolled in a Master’s or in a PhD programme.
- In the final year of a Bachelor’s programme.
- Or within one year after graduation from a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD programme.
- Or be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship programme and undertake the internship as part of this programme.
Experience:
- Good oral and written communication ability in English.
- Having extra skills that can be applied to online/offline communications (i.e. graphic design, photo editing, WeChat layout, etc.) will be an asset.
- Having overseas study experience will be an asset.
- Interested in local and regional governments initiatives and their role in achieving global agendas like 2030 Agenda.
- Ability to use simple design tools, such as Canva.

INTERNSHIP CONDITIONS
- Interns must provide proof of enrolment in health insurance plan and medical certificate of good health prior to starting the internship. Any cost arising from accidents and illness incurred during an internship assignment will be the responsibility of the intern.
- The stipend will be paid monthly. Interns will have 1.5 days of leave per month.
- Interns are responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed; Cost and arrangement for travel, visas, passports, accommodations and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or the intern.
- Interns must not apply for or be appointed to a position that should be encumbered by a staff number during the period of their internship. Interns are expected to fulfil the terms of their internships. Therefore, the internship must not be foreshortened for the purposes of allowing an intern to apply for a position.
- Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity.
- The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment within the UN System, but to complement an intern’s studies. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.
