We are seeking applicants for a research program with the U.S Geological Survey in Northwest Florida. The program is stationed in Port St. Joe in the Florida Panhandle. Projects include capturing, marking, tracking and sampling listed sea turtles, game fish such as cobia and tripletail, predatory sharks, coyotes and other coastal species. All applicants will assist with all aspects of the program.

Research will be conducted on foot, ATV/UTV, and by boat. Applicants should be ready and willing to work independently and as part of a team for up to 10 hours at a time but no more than 40 hours per week. The work will include surveying for and marking sea turtle nests each morning; capturing, marking, tracking and sampling of sea turtles at in-water foraging sites; capturing and tagging cobia tripletail and predatory sharks by boat; measuring sand compaction on local beaches; as well as data entry and organization. In addition, applicants will travel among research sites and conduct public outreach. Conditions during all activities will be hot and buggy with long periods of time in direct sun.

HOW TO APPLY

Applicants should be current students or recent graduates studying biology or a similar major; preference will be given to those with previous field experience.

Due to the fact that some of these projects occur on US Air Force property, all applicants must be US citizens.

Applicant positions have a mandatory start date by May 27th and are asked to commit through August 1st with the possibility to assist with work through November.

Positions are unpaid; however, shared housing and utilities are provided.

Interested applicants should submit a single document containing a cover letter and CV/resume to Joseph Alday at jalday@usgs.gov  by March 15st.

Interviews will be conducted before the final deadline as applications from qualified individuals are received.
