Seasonal Aquatic Biology Field Technician

EnviroScience is seeking multiple Aquatic Biology Field Technicians to support our Natural Resources team with biological assessments of rivers and streams in the Midwest, Southeast, and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. Field Technicians will work as a member of a 4-person crew responsible for using standardized sampling methods to complete the following surveys of wadeable and boatable streams: fish, benthic macroinvertebrates, water quality, and physical habitat. Field Technicians will work under the direct supervision of crew leaders and assist with completion of specific sampling protocols, equipment operation, and data recording. These positions include extended overnight travel (up to 2-3 weeks per trip) with lodging paid for by the project and meals reimbursed.

Technicians may also have the opportunity to assist with other projects, as needed, which may include but is not limited to other types of aquatic survey work, freshwater mussel surveys, wetland assessments, restoration projects and biological laboratory work.

Work Locations
Project teams will be based out of Stow, OH, Nashville, TN, and Richmond, VA. Project work will be completed in Alabama, Illinois, Indiana, Mississippi, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, and other states, as necessary.

Qualifications

Required

  • Completion or current enrollment in a BS or Associates degree in the Biological Sciences, Environmental Sciences, or a related field
  • Ability to complete supervised field work
  • Some experience working or recreating on or around rivers and streams
  • Must be willing to travel and work remotely for extended trips, including weekends, throughout the duration of the field season (June – September)
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule including long or variable hours
  • Some tasks will require strenuous work and/or long field days in potentially remote locations and adverse conditions
  • Ability to hike extended distances over rough, uneven terrain and sometimes off trail
  • Ability to lift and carry at least 50 lbs

Recommended

  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Familiarity with sampling/survey techniques for surface water, aquatic habitat, benthic macroinvertebrates, fish, and periphyton
  • Experience operating and working or recreating on a boat or canoe
  • Strong knowledge of fish taxonomy

Employment Period
Applicants must be available May – September/October 2024 with the potential for extension based on need and performance. The starting date can be adjusted slightly including a potential starting date before May, depending on the applicant’s availability.

Other Requirements
Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record. Background check required.
